Whatever; I have 4 widescreen monitors operating simultaneously and regularly move/swap windows between each. I've got a lot of balls in the air and like to keep my eye on each.

I can be writing a client, watching the attack in Syria, while watching what Exxon is doing in the stock market, as I keep an eye out for anyone posting updates to Anti-2nd Amendment legislation.

Clients, News, Stock-Market, Calguns - and not necessarily all in the order.

Not to mention tabs, many tabs.

Forums using any software can be themed to look in any way possible.

Yahoo Sports used Audentio to build out themes for all Rivals.com forums.

https://www.audent.io/

Check out rivals.com and see how different it is.

I can easily live with the format on Rav4World and Toyotanation

I just went a PM to one of the admins asking what they are using, but it seems to be common to all of the Verticalscope forums.

I only have 2x 4K monitors but I don't have any issues with insufficient workspace.

On topic, Xenforo would be my second choice after SMF, simply because the other outfit already has a history of sticking it to people who use the old 'ware.

Me neither; they "float" mounted to a rack. No stands, nothing in the way.

At this point, I no longer like any of the viable choices, but that's irrelevant; we'll all eventually go along with it anyway no matter what we like or don't like and make the best of it. Kestryll still runs a rather tight ship, he'll make it sail as best it can, and Calguns will still be awesome because of it.

Im sure it will be a pain in the rear anyways, but you should consider estimating how much development costs will be to convert to which ever platform you choose, and use that as part of you analysis too.

Once I was helping someone switch forums, they wanted to got vbulletin, and I forget what they wanted where at, some small depreciated forum SW.

There was no way to export directly from the Old to vB, but there was to other less popular forum SW.

So we ended up paying to convert from the Old to a temp forum script and from that convert to vB....funtimes.

Interesting.
I checked with one of the admins on Toyotanation and they (Autoguide) are still running 3.8.8, I thought it was newer or a different package due to the appearance, I'm thinking maybe Calguns is customized to look more like an older version given how common the Autoguide appearance is.

My only wish is for a functional Search.

Given that, I'm sure I can adapt to whatever you decide.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything out there that works as well as what we have (as bad as it is).
Those that use the custom Google search are horrible, and the sort order makes no logical sense... pretty much useless.

Yet the internet commandos still reply to new questions with "Use the search button"

No updates or improvements anymore just security patches for a while.

This puts a bit of a different spin on things, it seems that if we want to stay with vBulletin it's going to be vB5.

Here is what vB5 looks like in it's generic form: https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/
You should update Post #1 with this info and redo the poll, IMHO...

Which does lead us to a question: qui bono?

Fundamentally, the answer has to be Kestryll, in financial commitment, operating ease and reliability, and in accomplishing what he sees as the desired outcome from the money and time investment.

Boss, you might need a bigger thread, but would you care to address what you think Calguns is for, and who gets what expected benefits?

Here is what the board looks like: https://meta.discourse.org/

I don't see the big deal, it's clean, easy to find stuff, and has a pleasing layout. It's not one of the listed options though.

Discourse looks like an interesting option, I will say it is well formatted on mobile and web and thatís a plus that I wouldnít care about tapatalk.

It doesnít seem to have as much history as other options though, it is a 5 yr old open source project with early seed money so thereís the question of how well it will sustain itself and keep providing security updates.

So... missing the point much that without having a positive effect on the gun culture of all those mobile device tangled youngsters (myself included as a 39 yr old electrical engineer) you’re not going to be doing ANY activism of worth much longer in CA? Of what real value is having your properly formatted text in that light? Worthless. If users cannot use the site with the device they want to use it with you might as well not have it online.

It scales well, has plugins for trading and advertising, is written in Ruby (easiest language to learn IMO), and it is fairly easy to change the style. You can literally set up an EC2 instance or a DO droplet in a few minutes to get a nice customizable test sandbox to play in to see if you like it.

Iím not sure what Kestryll is paying monthly right now, but Iím betting this is cheaper to host too. It has been for some other sites that have switched.

Umm... No, that is just one of the most bland and unattractive forum interfaces I've seen in a decade or two.

I voted Xenforo before I got to this post. And I still Like it better.

On another note.

I started using Tapatalk because of CalGuns. Not because I like Tapatalk but because it did make it easier to read my favorite forum.

That being said I wouldn't mind using a different reader or even a dedicated read just for CalGuns.

Does Xenforo support different readers or have an option to create it's own dedicated reader?

The Xenforov, and SMF strike me as looking like phone apps. the Bulletin 4 seems the most formal in appearance, somewhat old-school look, but has the least visual deviation compared to what we got now IMO.

I do like the current layout seems very bland yes but professional, less frills than the vBulletin 4, and SMF. I like the header/layout on Bulletin the best.

On appearance alone I would choose the Bulletin 4, but have no technical knowledge to add to the conversation.

@Kestryll off topic, but can we get a pic of the CalGuns' server/s?

Can I strongly suggest, independent of the forum software, you set up the server so that connections to port 80 get redirected to the TLS port 443? And further, put in a HSTS header?
