Rob, I will definitely try to make it out to one of these, hopefully the Feb one will have good weather. What class would a Finnish 28-76 shoot in? Mine is a WWII barrel

If there are enough target rifles, I will split the Open class into scoped and target sight rifles.

For those who think they might have trouble hitting the target, don't worry about it. Below are sizes of the scoring rings in inches. The 300 yard target is on a 48" square card board backer, and the 500/600/800 are on a 6 foot (72") square card board backer. Almost impossible to miss. You should have no problem being on paper with your first sighter shots, and then you'll be able to adjust your sights/scopes, or your "hold" to get closer to the X ring.

SR-3 300 yards

Aiming Black (inches)
X ring . . . . . . . . . 3.00
10 ring . . . . . . . . . 7.00
9 ring . . . . . . . . . 13.00
8 ring . . . . . . . . . 19.00
Rings in White (inches)
7 ring . . . . . . . . . 25.00
6 ring . . . . . . . . . 31.00
5 ring . . . . . . . . . 37.00

MR-65 500 yards

X ring . . . . . . . . 5.00
10 ring . . . . . . . 10.00
9 ring . . . . . . . . 15.00
8 ring . . . . . . . . 20.00
7 ring . . . . . . . 25.00
6 ring . . . . . . . 30.00
Rings in White (inches)
5 ring . . . . . . . . . . 36.00

MR-1 600 yards

Aiming Black (inches)
X ring . . . . . . . . 6.00
10 ring . . . . . . . 12.00
9 ring . . . . . . . . 18.00
8 ring . . . . . . . . 24.00
7 ring . . . . . . . . 36.00
Rings in White (inches)
6 ring . . . . . . . . . . 48.00
5 ring . . . . . . . . . . 60.00

LR 800 yards

Aiming Black (inches)
X ring . . . . . . . 10.00
10 ring . . . . . . . 20.00
9 ring . . . . . . . . 30.00
8 ring . . . . . . . . 44.00
Rings in White (inches)
7 ring . . . . . . . . . . 60.00
6 area . . . 72x72 square

I would love to try!
But do I have to have match experience? I've never been in a match before and don't know how to sight for someone.

Edit: If I have a period uniform to go with the rifle, can I wear it?
I've been working on a project about Lyudmila Pavlichenko.

No match experience needed. You won't be "sighting" for someone, you'll just be keeping score for them. That's not difficult, it just requires you pay attention. You sit behind the shooter, and using a spotting scope - or even binoculars - when the target comes back up with the spotting and scoring disks on it, you note the position of the scoring disk and write the shot score on the score sheet.

When you do your turn in the target pits you'll be pulling the target and marking the shots with a spotting disk and hanging the scoring disk in the appropriate position.

One of the members here put together the best video tutorial in 3 parts, of how to pull and mark targets I've ever seen and posted it on the forum. Anyone who wants to shoot a High Power format type match (which ours will be) should take the time to watch them.

Absolutely. The Garand shooters do it all the time at their matches. No reason why can't at this one.

This sounds like a lot of fun! I will definitely keep an eye on this thread and hope to get out there with the 03A3 and the Garand (once I get it...).

So to double check for myself and anybody else wondering, steel core Russian surplus will be fine to shoot through my M39? If not I have Yugo too.

Yep, good to go.

Only the stuff specified is no go. We shoot on paper targets and theimpact area is dirt.

This looks like a good father son event....! I'll be there with my 18 year old and we'll give it a shot...! I think it will be a good lesson for him. He's a pretty good shot out to 400 meters when we do the silhouette out there so this will test him a bit. How long does the match last approximately....? Regards

Default Vintage Military Rifle Match - Practice Session Range Report!!

I went out to Sac Valley range on Saturday to get in a little practice for the upcoming vintage military rifle match on the 26th. I've only been out there once before, and I only shot at the regular range by the parking lot, so this was a whole new experience for me. The farthest I have ever shot is 200 yards with both my Garand and my Finnish Mosins, so I was excited to try shooting a little farther

So I met up with the guys from the Nor Cal Practical Precision Rifle Club and Rob (Pthfnder) helped me get started. I chose to shoot in the first session and pull targets on the second round, which ended up being a good choice since the wind kicked up pretty good in the afternoon. Everyone else on the line was shooting modern rifles except I did see one M1D Garand and also another scoped Milsurp which I think was Swedish but I'm not sure.

The NCPPRC was shooting 200yds, 300, 425, 500, 600, 800, 900 and & 1,000. I shot with them up until I had problems keeping it on the paper at 800 and I realize now I should have stopped at 600 since it was my first time and I wasn't really prepared to calculate the amount of bullet drop and how much I needed to move the sights up. I also had a problem with my sight adjustment screw loosening up so I lost all reference for where I had them set at the last shooting position, so it was best for me to sit out the final positions.

I also shot all the positions prone with a sling, not realizing I could have brought a sand bag or something to hold the rifle better... I will definitely have something better for support next time!!

Here is a photo from the 900 yard position. This is before the rest of the guys got setup, everyone was just pulling their vehicles up to park. I am posting this as a regular sized photo first:

OK, so the targets are not up at this point but you should still be able to see the markers. Here is a link to the full sized photo so you can see how unbelievably small the target would be from this distance:

So now here is a photo of my target, pasted up on the door to my office. I started out by circling the 200 yd shots, then drawing an X on the 300 yd. I then realized it would work better just to number them, so I put the rest with the first digit of the distance. I'm pretty happy with the 200, 300 and especially the 500. After that, it was pretty much a battle just to get on paper

And here is a close up:

In closing I would definitely encourage anyone who is considering going to the match on the 26th to get out there and give it a try. It is a blast to shoot this far and it was worth the long drive.

Looks like I'm going to the range this weekend! If anyone wants to meet up at the Oroville clay pits, I will be the guy trying to hit 2 liter bottles with a Mosin.

Brian, I think the shooter with M41b was cmaher55's son. Was good to meet both of you.

You did very well considering you were shooting on our B27 like silhouette target instead of the full size bulls eye target. That thing gets really hard to see the further out you get. I wish it had clicked with me that you were shooting iron sights before we got to the firing line. I would have got the key for the HP connex and put up the bulls eye target for you.

The young man with the M41b was able to stay on paper all the way out to 1000 yards and got lots of good hits. Shows what one can do with a 4x scope and good rifle/cartridge like the Swede.

For those looking at Brian's target, the orange dot is 3", the "torso" is only 22" wide.

Thanks for the post. Weather wise, too bad it wasn't this past weekend. Do you have to qualify? I've shot a CMP Garand match at 200yds, but I'd love to try out my Springfield 03 at that distance.

No qualification needed. Just bring some ammo out and have fun. I expect quite a few Garand shooters.

Jeff, I also brought my 1903 Springfield out there since I wasn't sure which one I would shoot. I ended up using the Garand because of the longer sight radius but I wish I would have used the 03 now I was shooting 150 gr Hornady FMJ in the Garand but I had some 168 and 180gr 30-06 loads for the 1903 that might have done better at the longer distances.

I'm seriously considering shooting one of my Finnish 28-30s in the match since I have so many rounds loaded for those and I shoot them a lot more than any of my other rifles.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That sounds awesome! I would be in for making the trip for that; I'm sooo tired of the Laguna Seca Range with it's 200 yard burm. I want to shoot my K98 and M1 as they were meant to be shot. Can you use more then one rifle? And no experience with matches required right?

Too far out for me without the necessary planning. Maybe next time.

kp, you're posting in the wrong section. Anyways, check out Samco:

Send them your C&R and you'll be good. Enjoy!

You could shoot both if you wanted to. No match experience is required. We'll show you what to do and how to do it.

As long as it's only a light or intermittent rain, we will go on as planned. If the rain is too hard it damages the target backers. Can't let that happen as they are needed for the long range matches in March that run continuously for the whole month.

Since it looks like we're going to get some rain before the weekend, we won't be able to drive to the 500 yard line. I won't make people carry all their gear from 600 to 500.

Frank (6mmintl) had a good idea to shoot from 200/300/600/800, and we can do that no problem.

Looks like we might get lucky and the worst of the rain will be over, or almost over by Saturday morning.

I'm very interested in this. I have one question: are recoil pads ok for stock division? Like the one on this page: http://www.tickbitesupply.com/mosstk.html

3rd item down.

I saw this a month ago and forgot about. This is very doable for me to make.
So will we just be losing the 500 from the rain?

Yes. The ground gets too soft (mostly clay) to drive to the 500 yard firing line. So we'll shoot at 200/300/600/800. Weather permitting.

Any recoil pad will be allowed. I know how those steel butt plates can hurt without one, or a shooting jacket.
