Default AK gas tube/ handguard stuck...

I just got this rifle for Christmas, and I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to remove the gas tube/ upper handguard. I flipped the little selector up, and I can get it as far as shown in the picture, but no further. Any suggestions? Its driving me crazy.

Just give it a good yank. It was probably tapped on with a hammer.

stuff a towel in between the gas tube and lower guard and use a screwdriver to leverage it out.

Move the lever a bit back and just pull up sharply on the gas tube assembly. If that does not work just keep playing with the lever position until the tube comes off. Sometimes they are very tight.

Man, I have been yanking on it all kinds and haven't gotten anywhere. I tried prying with my bowie knife, and just ended up cutting myself. I have a ball peen hammer, I thought I might try and wedge a flathead in where the tube meets the rifle, and tap it out, but that doesn't seem like it should be necessary.

Plus Move the "selector"/release lever back and forth a bit, you may have moved it too far.

SUCCESS! The rag (or wife beater, as it were) and screwdriver did the trick. Hopefully it loosens up a bit? This can't be the norm; sites I saw online made it appear really simple to remove.

You gotta make sure it's squared up too. If that is tilted to either side, it will make it a PITA to get out.

If it is a Saiga it's been converted, that GB has a Bayo lug on it. I'm guessing Arsenal

Yeah, SGL-21 courtesy of my father. Its pretty nice, although overpriced, but I didn't expect to have to start banging on it with a hammer and **** right out of the box.

Now my next question is, how to I remove the plastic hand guard and put the wood on? (I don't have the wood finished yet, but in preparation).

Really? The risk of messing something up is that severe? I don't understand how it just turns off the tube; the little things holding it on appear to be oval, not half circle. How will wood be able to get around that?

Yes the wood will go around that bend, you gotta set it into the groove. Also, take the wood into the bathroom when you shower, get a bit of moisture into the wood to keep it from cracking. You will need to grab it all the way around when spinning it on. Go slow and you will feel if the wood is starting to crack.

considering how you managed to take off a simple gas tube on an AK, yeah the risks for you to ruin it are great! better not do it. It's beautiful in plastic. Leave it the way it is. First thing many people do when they get AK with wood is change it to plastic black.

Surprising... I think the wood looks and feels a lot better, but I guess everyone is different. The problem with the gas tube wasn't due to my ineptitude; since I've never owned an AK, I figured it was better to ask before I really went to town prying that thing off, in case there was something I had missed . Now that I know about the hand guard, I'm confident I'll be able to switch them out. And hey, then I'll have the plastic one's left over, if I ever change my mind.

santacruzstefan,

It is a simple remove!!! The trick is all in the lever when you flip it. Move it too high and the surfaces will drag on the gas tube making it hard for your to remove. IF you do it again just don't move the lever so high and it should come off easier. When it is off look at the lever and locking areas to see what I'm talking about. It might be asier if you put on a dab of grease as it might make it esier for you in the future.

Your prettu lucky as most rifles are easier and some are tight. My latest AK/IO Casars gas tube is pretty loose and I much prefer mine tight. Mines loose and wiggles and the lever is kinda loose also so during live fire I'm afraid the lever might flip up. I'll just use a drop of loc-tight to get it more firm.

Good luck,

Mail Clerk
