Eh, always liked the aesthetic of M4s but at 500 meters I was really missing my M16A4.

I undressed one of the two M4s; from tacticool to simplicity of stock-like condition.

Really love the M4s, especially when with 14.5 inches looking barrels.

So, just for the interested ones (probably in this thread) I have just purchased the (in)famous FN Military Collector Edition M4 (or whatever they call it).

I started DROS today, so I'll have the lower in 10 days from today. I did take the upper with me, however, and it's terrific. Really well made. I am a sucker for these rifles.
What this is, is an M4 clone with a barrel length of 14.7 inches with a pinned and welded real A2 flash hider. Look at the military profile barrel. Beautiful.

I snapped this picture at the store (Parallax, thanks Joseph!)

by SoloDallas, on Flickr

I will take more pictures later.

First, super interesting fact (at least, for me): it's surprisingly, exactly, precisely the same barrel length (overall) as the SAW Colts. Identical.

The FN might maybe be one millimeter less, for now I just put the uppers one next to the other. Will make accurate measurements later.

It's just amazing quality, however.

I've been back and forth regarding FNs lineup; very beautiful! I may have to buy one myself.

So was I, brother. Then went to the store. Handled it, seen it.
Loved it.

Reasoned about the fact that I love the looks of this, I am definitely a collector for looks.

Done it

Will be posting more pictures and evaluations about all this for sure.

Following up on the FN upper; as you see, it's sitting on a DSA lower (for now, while DROSing).

It's the rifle in the middle. Look at the barrels. Now taking a close up, comparison picture.

10 days of DROS elapsed, I now also have my FN lower (to go with my previously brought home, FN upper). Pictured here.
It is a very nice rifle.

Well and then, I thought I would add directly a comparison image of the two together; that is, the FN Military Collector's Edition (on top) and the Colt SAW 6920 we have seen above several times.

SD, quick question for you...

Is the ambi safety on the FN a Colt safety (or contracted like-Colt part)? I ask because the only Colt ambi-safety I've found is a full-auto one, and unfortunately when I installed it in a 6920, it would bind everything up due to the auto sear block.

If there's another source of a like-Colt semi-auto ambi safety, that would be great.

Wish I knew, brother.
A few parts of this rifle (was told) are full auto for sure. BCG, for example, is.

Other than that though, I truly don't know.
Will try and research it more

Does the FN have an auto sear block? If it does, I doubt the safety is full auto. Also, you can tell a safety is full auto by flicking it where the "FULL" setting would be. Obviously it won't do anything except go to safe again.

I didn't mean to suggest your safety was full-auto, just that apparently there are semi auto ambi safeties that look just like the Colt one, since it's on your rifle, which would be great for someone looking for such a critter.

Either way, if you find out more, I'd be interested to hear.

I love the way your rifles look. I just picked up a Colt LE6921 upper from Midway. I'm going to have a local gunsmith pin and weld an A2 flash hider with an ADCO spacer to get it over 16" oal. I'll post up pics when I get it back.

Picked up my upper from the gunsmith today. Put on the KAC M4 RAS and Matech sight. Barrel length comes out to 16".

You can see that the ADCO spacer is a slightly different color than the Colt barrel finish.

Pin and weld job from my local gunsmith.

@SoloDallas, awesome thread.

One question I have: How long did this take?

a couple weeks?
a couple months?
6 months?

Brother, thanks. A couple of months but that is really variable (it depends on the amount of work SAW has at any given time).

To make you an example, I just placed another order for another upper (same, just more of the same, it's too gorgeous, too much) and I haven't heard back from Ken (owner) yet.

But I know him. I have trust in them. They are top notch.
This will be my third upper from them and I can't stop.

Do it, just do it.

Small update: because I am getting yet another upper (to go on a Colt marked M4A1 lower), this one I brought down to KISS status.

Seeing all the uber dressed and tricked out stuff makes me somewhat want to go to simplicity.

And it looks so good.

ETA always notice SAW pinned and welded Colt barrel - to me that's what really looks elegant here (that size)

Hi Solo, based on your thread i sent in my brand new 6920 upper to Ken Elmore back on January the 9th. Up to that point communication with Ken took place via email and i got replies right away, after the upper was delivered on Jan 9th i have not heard from them even a confirmation of my upper being delivered to them.

Its been more than a couple of months now and i am starting to worry. I have emailed ken about 3 times and have not gotten a single reply.

I just wanted to get your take on this, is the lack of communication typical? and how long did it take for your work to be completed by SAW, i just registered and also sent you a PM
Thank you.

Hey brother - saw and replied to your PM.
All good - his lack of communication IS typical, it's well known, been so for years.

The reason is not that he doesn't want to; but he's really busy with government work (usually).

He should get back to you anyhow, either with your upper at your doorstep (soon) or an email reply.

Speak soon!

**Disclaimer SAW / Specialized Armament mainly deals with Govt customers. Private owners like us are not their bread and butter,
we are merely a side project for them and in my opinion we should be thankful that SAW does entertain private civilian requests.
If you want your work done fast Send your stuff to ADCO firearms in Ohio, compared to SAW their work is a notch below,
but the pricing and turn around time more than make up for it.
Also they do not have the experience that SAW does so you have to weigh your options before sending your stuff to get worked on.
Ken is a busy guy and he simply doesn't have time to reply to emails asking for a status update.

Here is my story as a reference for anyone else looking to send their stuff to Specialized Armament.

After 6 1/2 months I Finally Got my upper back,
here is how everything played out. I am not Complaining, just trying to set everyone's expectation straight when they order shop services from SAW / Specialized armament.

Here is my review / timeline

Saturday, 12/23/17 - Sent ken the initial email asking for instructions on how to get the upper shipped to him and how to pay for it.

Ken's initial reply was on 12/28/17 but didn't include the send to address.

Got the Send to Address on 1/3/18 and shipped it out the following day.

Specialized Armament received the upper on 1/9/18 (tuesday)

Sent a follow up email on 1/16/18, then again on 1/18/18, nothing came back

Sent another follow up email on 3/4/18, again no response.

In April i got tired of waiting around for a 1.45 upper... so I bought a 14.5 Barrel from Arms Unlimited / Purchased the Colt Genuine upper parts kit + BCM A2X
from Brownells and along with a Colt keyhole forge upper. Sent everything to ADCO on a Monday and had an assembled / pinned and welded upper back in my hands on Friday.

Now that's Fast (ADCO's shop turned it around in 3 hours) (5 days including shipping) ADCO Charged my around $80 with shipping back to me.

Sent Another Follow up email on 5/1/18 along with a phone call on 5/2/18 demanding some sort of update.

Finally Heard Back from Ken on 5/3/18 apologizing for the delay due to a large Govt. Contract, he also wrote back that its in the shop getting worked on. Relief on my End.

I finally got a notification of completion with the request to pay via a secure link on 6/18/18

The upper shipped on 6/23/18 and i had it in my hands a couple of days later. The upper came back in a really nice vacuum sealed bag in perfect condition (not a single scratch on it)
the finish on the flash hider was just perfect compared to ADCO that left some marks on the barrel and the upper when it was in their vise block

The entire turn around time took about 7 months.

The moral of the Story is, if you cant wait 7 month for quality work that costs significantly more and takes forever with no communication or updates,
Ken is not your guy and you are better off sending your stuff to ADCO.

Here are some pics for comparison.
