Water Filtration System
CheaperThanDirt.com has a water filtration system for $30 that says it will produce 14gallons per day. Anybody currently have one of these? Thoughts, ideas,etc? I'm starting to work on my earthquake kit for my family and have purification tabs and see that many have the Katadyn set-up but was just wondering what the verdict was on this product. Thanks for the input.

In my experience, the Steri Pen does not work. A buddy of mine and I went hiking at San Gorgonio and we both got severely ill after drinking water 'purified' with the Pen. We even double dosed the water with the Steri Pen as we were both a bit nervous with the thought of a new purification system. FWIW, the water was clear as a bell.

Another Katadyn fan here (Pro hiker pump & Base camp filters). I use mine while camping & 4-wheeling, they're great!!
I'm curious about the CTD filter too (mostly the specs on it). I'd be careful, these seem to be one of those "you get what you pay for" items

Poking around on CTD, I think I found the filter the OP is talking about. I've heard good things about this set up-

Stupid state!
I ordered a couple of these in the past. Reading the reviews, someone said that CTD won't ship to their state. Getting a bad feeling, I tried to enter city and state and they won't ship these any more to CA!!!!  I tell you, this place is way past ridiculous already.....

Katadyn is great, its what I own.
I've also used MSR filters for about 530miles and also have had great results. Like the other poster I would not recommend a SteriPen as they seems to have a tendency to fail.

Do not use scented bleaches, color safe bleaches, powdered bleaches, or bleaches with added cleaners. You want the good old fashion stuff that smells like chlorine and burns holes in your clothes if you pour it right on them. Even this is hard to choose because it is now available in different concentrations. Ultra Clorox is a 6% solution instead of 5.25% but it is the same stuff. Keep a bottle of plain 5.25% or 6% chlorine bleach with no additives in the laundry room to use for water purification. Besides, this cleans sweat socks as well as any of the others. To treat water with chlorine bleach, put the water in a clean container and add 16 drops of bleach for every gallon of water. Stir in the bleach and let the water stand for 30 minutes. If the water does not have a little smell of bleach, repeat the dosage of 16 drops per gallon and let it sit for another 15 minutes. If it smells of bleach now it is OK to drink. If it doesn't smell of bleach after two treatments, the water is too dirty to use. Throw it away and treat a new batch of water. AMOUNTS OF BLEACH FOR ORDINARY CONTAINERS 1 quart bottle 4 drops of bleach 2 liter soda bottle 10 drops of bleach 1 gallon jug 16 drops of bleach (1/8 tsp) 2 gallon cooler 32 drops of bleach (1/4 tsp) 5 gallon bottle 1 teaspoon of bleach

One of these cost me $33 with shipping. Looks like the one linked above. Good for 3,000 to 4,000 gallons just need buckets. Which I have. Still need to treat swell, but filter looks solid. For BOL I gave the Gravityn by Katadyn. Good for a life time,39k gallons, but only 1 gal. An hour.

Thanks for the replies..if CTD won't ship here I'll have family in AZ buy it and ship it to me. I'll also take a look at the Katadyn systems and keep a bottle of bleach tucked away for emergencies. Thanks again!!

I've used the steri-pen over the past year. Used it to treat tap water in Thailand, 3 backpacking trips in Sequioa NP and Desolation NF. Haven't had any issues. The water for backpacking weren't scummy. One time was flowing stream, other times were standing ponds/lakes. No bowel issues after drinking the treated water.
I carry these tablets too http://www.aquamira.com/consumer/aqu...ablets-24-pack just in case. I've used these tablets as stand alone and they work great. Packaging says to wait 4 hours, but you can drink the water after 1 hour.

You guys looking into the Katadyn...PLEASE also look into the First Need XL.
IMO, it is the best filter made. High flow rate, best filtration, and it also works as a gravity filter. (A gravity filter is the #1 way to filter if you are doing large amounts of water). That being said, I used a Katadyn for years, they rock. I AM JUST A TOTAL CONVERT TO THE FIRST NEED!!

I was sick for a solid week. Freaking sick. How's that for a field test? Get a good pump filter and if you really want extra protection drop a couple of chlorine tablets in. Otherwise it's pray and drink! And don't buy a SteriPen.

city's matter in for some items based on local laws.. ammo into the city of LA for example are a no no, yet long beach is ok.
for the two items i posted, they refuse to ship to the entire state of california.. they consider pistol grips to be illegal to ship into california.

I have the katadyn pocket... very nice durable filter. I got mine for 200$, but I see the price is up to 350$! I did find somewhere that is cheaper (230$), I think I'ma buy another today since I was thinking of getting one for the gf.
