Default Exile Machine releases CA Compliance Parts designs under Creative Commons License

At Exile Machine, we believe that ban compliance devices should be free of patent. We have designed and marketed more different "featureless" compliance devices than any other manufacturer, and we've never patented any of our designs.

Anyone should be able to take an existing compliance design and make it better. We believe the aggressive stifling of innovation through the patent process (as we've seen by a certain "fixed mag" product manufacturer) has no place in this particular market.

Now it's time to take it a step further. Effective 3/25/17 we are releasing all our designs under a creative commons sharealike / attribution license for anyone to use, produce or modify.

We encourage other manufacturers to follow our lead. We encourage creative individuals to take what we have and make it better. We also encourage consumers to not do business with those companies who stifle the innovation in this market by aggressive patent enforcement.

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. This is a coerced market, not a free market. No matter how much you like your particular choice of compliance device, you wouldn't be buying compliance devices at all if it weren't a burden legislated and enforced by threat of arrest and prison.

We have individuals and companies trying to lock up their single embodiment of a compliance solution via aggressive patent enforcement, and theirs may not be the ideal solution, which could be arrived at by iterative competitive processes if not for the aggressive enforcement.

We say let innovators come up with as many options as possible and stop trying to monopolize the market.

That crap should not fly in this type of market. So we've released our stuff and we'll keep releasing new designs that way. The nature of that license requires derivatives to also release their designs. It's a win-win. You'll see more of our designs, new stuff, coming out in the next few weeks.

This is awesome, and you guys are awesome! I'm going to buy at least one, but I'd love to mess with the CAD model too. Am I the only one having a hard time downloading it?

We have a legal expenses donation item on the store, a vestige from our run-in with the City of SF over repair kits back in 2013: https://www.exilemachine.net/shop/ex...ion-57729.html
Or if you like, you can paypal to legaldefense@exilemachine.com.

The download worked! Much appreciated. When I mess with the model is there somewhere I can post a step or stl file? If anyone is interested...
Also, I haven't opened the file yet but the image doesn't show the cutouts for the lower modeled in. Was there a legal reason to leave that out? There are blueprints out there so it's not hard to add, just curious. Again, thanks!

You can post the modified file anywhere you like. Thingiverse is a good place, grabcad, youmagine.com there are plenty of online repositories for posting 3D files.

The CAD model does not have the pistol grip mount feature or the rear threads and internal voids. Those were added by the mold tooling shop later.

Got some questions about what does a Creative Commons license mean?

It means you are free to:

Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
for any purpose, even commercially.

The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.
Under the following terms:

Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

No additional restrictions — You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

The nylon spring is the latch that holds the Backfin onto the MIAD grip. It is very difficult to print correctly, especially compared to the body of the Backfin. The Taulman Alloy 910 material is expensive. It requires equal measure science and art to get it right. It can be done by carefully following the directions we have posted on Thingiverse, but to avoid pulling your hair out, we have the springs for sale on the store here:

Effective 6/18/2017 we have discontinued our drop shipping business to focus 100% on the design and manufacturing of compliance parts for customers in restricted states.
