Default Request for Recipe (.308), also info to share *NEW PROJECT*

Let's start a thread for .308!!

I know a lot of guys are using 175SMK, 155Scenar.... guys, please post your recipe...

Randall, since you have that nice program.... can you please post some "calculated" numbers for 168SMK, 175SMK, 155 Scenar, 155 SMK/Nosler Palma, etc..

Again, the info in this thread is BY NO MEANS a guide..... all this is, is an *idea* for you, so that you can start low and then work up your load.....

Here is some background info from 6mmbr.com:

My gun.....

Remington 700 SPS stock 1-12 barrel cut to 22.25 with a muzzle break brings it to 24".

My loads.....

155 Scenars - RL15 46.5g, Winchester Brass, CCI BR2 primers, seated to 2.82 velocities are just over 2900 fps. Something like 2910 to 2920.

175g SMKs - RL15 45.5g, Winchester brass, CCI BR2 seated to 2.8. Velocities are just over 2780 fps.

I may back it down to 45g since that seemed a little to hot. No pressure signs but I want to get as close to 2700 even as possible. Next development range trip will load a selection between 45 and 45.4 to see what is happy.

Reading the above article is a lot faster than everyone posting personal loads. Especially some of the loads I use coincide with some mentioned in that above article.

Been using the 155 scenars for a while now and see no need to use anything else. 44.8gr Varget, WLR, RA60 brass. Gives me about 2830 avg. out of my 24in 10fp. I'll let you know what it does out of an SPS Varmint I have coming. I decided my R+D build is going to be a .260

I dunno, personally I prefer to use the Speer 125 gr HP-TNT's in my Model 700 Synthetic Varmint 308. Less perceived recoil and unless you are shooting much past 200 yards, probably every bit as accurate as any other bullet out there in the expensive bullet category. Super high priced boat tailed bullets are really not needed in the under 200 yard ranges we have local to the bay area. I can shoot sub MOA groups practically all day with my setup and load. My preference is 45 gr of IMR 4895 with the Speer 125's. An older old reliable powder that I actually have a fair amount on hand currently. I think the velocity is up in the 3000 fps range..

You can find all pricing(rough) info on www.powdervalleyinc.com

Do the math yourself. All depends on what you use, new Lapua brass is $0.50 each but you can get N-number of reloads out of it.

Roughly, $.35-.40 each if you have brass.
- premium bullet (eg 175SMK) ~$.25
- powder ~$.10
- primer ~$.02

Can get down below $.30 each if you use cheaper bullets (168Nosler)

I figure I got it to about $0.40 cents a pop for my 155g load. So about $20 a 50. Grafs deal pricing for Lapua 155 factory loads is $24 a box of 20. Black Hills 175 is $20 a box dealer pricing at Midway.

I shoot 175 SMK's in my M1a Sub-moa with 42.5 gr of imr 4895, cci 200's in a LC Match case.

I shoot 168 gr SMK's and Nosler custom comps in the same rifle with 41.5 gr of imr 4895, cci 200's, LC Match case all sub-moa.

I've tried up to 43 gr with the above bullets with no pressure signs.

you should also ask people to put their rifle, barrel length, and twist rate. results will vary from each rifle.

For 200yds and less:
125gr TNT, 42.5gr IMR4895, WLR, LC case, 2.75" (2900fps)

For the rest of the way out:
155grSierra/Nosler, 41.0gr IMR4895, WLR, LC case, 2.815" (2800fps)

M1A Supermatch, 1:12" barrel. My rifle isn't picky about loads.

I use 47.0 grains of a 2006 lot of Hodgdon's Varget in Winchester cases, 210M primers, and Sierra 155's. Average velocity on a really cold day- it was 38 and windy, this is California ; ) - was 2985 fps out of a 30" barrel. ES / SD weren't all that impressive, but the rounds held great elevation at 800, 900, and 1,000 yards. Interestingly, this is the same load I used with a 2002 lot of Varget where the average was 2995 fps.

There's been a lot of griping in some circles that Varget is somewhat variable from lot to lot. I've talked to quite a few people that talk about Varget in terms of "New Varget" and "Old Varget."

Which is a better primer? CCI BR2 or Fed210M?

Also, are CCI #200 and Fed210, good enough?

Lastly, anyone know what primers do Lapua Ammunition(.308 WIN 155 Scenar) and BHA(.308 WIN 168SMK) use?

Why bother debating between BR2 and 210M? I'd be really surprised if you got hold of some 210M.

With that said.. I use BR2.. you really can't go wrong. They're supposed to have a harder cup and also be a little wider for a tight(er) fit.

I have some of the 210M from a while back.
What's the difference between them and BR primers?

From what I was told by the guy at the reloading store in angeles is you won't see much diff between the benchrest primers but you will get a more consistent burn with BR primers vs ordinary primers. Take that for what its worth.

Many fellow Palma shooters talk in terms of old / new Varget, and charge weights have gone up a few grains since Varget first became popular; I've heard of using as much as 48 grains ! Hodgdon's website, a great resource, has a maximum of 47.0 with a Sierra 155. I was surprised to find the two lots averaged so closely. In warm weather the '02 lot gave 3,005 fps; I'll check the '06 lot when it gets warm and may up the charge a half grain. I buy 4 jugs of the same lot, when it's time for new powder, it's also time for a new barrel.

I recently ran a series of Varget loads with moly coated 155 SMK's through my gun.
46.0, 46.5 and 47.0
On the 47.0 series most showed more primer flattening than I was comfortable with.
There were some slight ejector swipes as well.
I dropped back to 46.5gr as my load to use.

This is with new Varget.

Cuz... in my research, may reloaders seems to be very happy with 210M....

But i guess, if they couldn't be found... then.... BR2 it is... in small amount... cost really isn't that big of a difference between BR2 and... #200 and regular Fed210

MOLY COATED BULLETS allow more powder due to reduced friction.
Federal GMM brass that's once fired by a friend.
I don't think I am really compressing powder though.
Those 155's are short.

My fired primers are flatter than new, but the edges are still rounded and I couldn't measure any increased case web expansion from 46.0 to 46.5 to 47.0 grains. 46.5 grains would probably work fine for me too, but I'm more confident with the bullet starting out closer to 3,000 fps.
What kind of velocity are you getting with 46.5 grains and mollied 155's ?
Regards,
Mike

All fired through a 30" Krieger, .3065, Medium Palma contour, Winchester brass, Varget powder (two different lot #'s), jumped .020:

Russian primer, SMK 155, 45.5 gr., .430" group, 2996 fps, 12.6 ES, 7.3 SD - lightest tested
Russian primer, SMK 155, 47.0 gr., .520" group, 3071 fps, 17.2 ES, 10 SD - max. tested

CCI BR primer, SMK 155, 45.75 gr., .500" group, 2988 fps, 26.3 ES, 10.7 SD - lightest tested
CCI BR primer, SMK 155, 46.75 gr., .425" group, 3050 fps, 10.4 ES, 4.4 SD - max. tested

CCI BR primer, Lapua 155, 45.25 gr., .280" group, 3007 fps, 20.2 ES, 8.0 SD - lightest tested
CCI BR primer, Lapua 155, 46.5 gr., .435" group, 3077 fps, 10.6 ES, 5.0 SD - max. tested

These two lots of powder are not too bad, but one is likely 2007 and the other likely 2005. They are pretty similar in burn rate. The best lot EVER was from 2005, and is all gone. Another lot from 2006 had erratic burn rates and produced terrible SD and ES. It was fine for anything under 800 yards, but was a disaster the further back you shot.

As far as different primers go - I tested Russian, Fed 210M, and CCI BR. The velocities were pretty similar, but each had its own velocity where the groups and SD and ES were best.

I have fired up to 47 1/2 grains at over 3100 fps, but saw no benefit to it. I know others who use 48 grains. I believe that the most recent Nosler manual lists 48 grains as a max load.

For this weekend's matches, I will load 46 grains of Varget, a SMK 155, and CCI BR primers. It shoots at 3013 fps, .335" groups, 10.1 ES, 5.5 SD. Should work just fine, but a Lapua 155 is my favorite load of all time.

Hope all of this typing is helpful to someone...
Lane

Do you believe everything you hear?
There are people saying they are good and other people saying they are bad (about ANYTHING).
I guess you just have to choose who to listen to...

I guess any bullet going down the barrel would be bad for it I dont use moly coated bullets, but its because of convenience(lazy). From what I have read you need different solvents to remove the build up in the barrel and its a longer procedure. And now, to tell you the truth with the way my MK.I eyeballs are going in the cr***per and the lack of practice I wouldnt be able to to tell if it makes a difference anyway. There use to be treatment for the barrel, so instead of adding the moly, shooting would remove it just had to reapply every so many shots, dont think it worked to good cause it didnt last to long on the market. My recipe for my M1A and .308 Garand is 155 SMK palma, Win match case, 43 gr of varget, fed 210 primers.(200 and 300 yd)

I use the Winchester cases that weigh around 156 grains. I only neck size the cases so once they're fire formed to the chamber, they may hold a wee bit more Varget. 47.0 grains comes up almost to the top of the shoulder and leaves plenty of room for a Sierra 155. Lapuas are a different story tho'.

Lane,
My current stock of Varget is the 2006 lot and while the ES/SD numbers were not impressive, the load appears to hold great elevation at 1,000; it better work, I have 24 pounds to go thru.

Mike
