Default High capacity mag question?

I have a 30 rd. Ram-Line magazine for my Ruger 10/22 from 1988. When hi-cap mags became illegal in 2000, people that previously owned them could keep them (grandfathered).

Since I'm not the best at keeping up with State politics, and all the proposed changes being discussed, I'm wondering if me owning this mag is illegal?

Can someone enlighten me? I don't need to be chalking up a felony, because of ignorance.

And when that POS ramline dies which it will.
every ramline I ever owned was POS.

You buy a new rebuild kit to replace it.

Only legal if parts are interchangeable.

Interesting. I've had this one for 25 years, and it works like a champ. Never one problem.

Let me know how that works out for you in court after you spend 40k in legal fees and your freedom hangs in the balance.

Since you owned it before the ban, you can legally own it now. Positively.

Your question got answered in the first reply. If you don't believe that reply, go look through the CGF wiki for current magazine related laws.

As an aside, I believe the only ones they can prove are NOT pre-ban are the steel lipped ones since that model came out post-ban.

I know someone will correct me if I am wrong but AFAIK the only high-cap 10/22 mag that comes apart is the new (and obviously WAY post-ban) Ruger BX25s. All the rest are glued together from what I have seen.

First, there is no such thing as a pre or post ban magazine in CA, period.

Second, you can rebuild the plastic lip magazines with kits that have steel lips.

Third, even though this isn't really a factor, there is a 3 year statute of limitations. They would have to prove that your manufactured or imported the magazine within the past 3 years, and since possession is not illegal the burden of proof is on the state.

If you don't already own any, odds are you aren't going to be owning any. If you're asking if you can build them as 10/25's or whatever, yes you can.

For 25 year old colt mags that you didn't have, but have kool-aid? No, you can't buy rebuild kits and just assemble large capacity mags.

that would be wrong. there are a few brands that come apart, such as the Tactical Innovations mags, http://www.tacticalinc.com/ti25-mach...022-p-212.html . But just because the original was glued together if you were to damage the mag body, why wouldn't you be able to use a bolt-together mag body to repair it?

It wouldn't be 'repairing' them with a pmag, it would be a repair. Stop with the quotes and kool-aid garbage.

So the whole "grandfathering of already owned high-cap mags" didn't happen when the Ban went into affect and we have always been able to keep buying new production ones and use them openly on the range?

Got a link?

It can be a factor, if the newly "repaired" magazine consistes soley of BX25 repair parts.

Quote:
So?
So... if you have to destroy the mag to repair it then are you really repairing it or simply replacing it with a newly assembled high capacity banned magazine.

I don't get why this is so difficult to understand. Possession of large capacity magazines is not illegal per the CA penal code. There is no requirement in the CA penal code to have possessed the magazines before a certain date, or to only have magazines or components for those magazines manufactured before a certain date. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PRE OR POST BAN MAGAZINE IN CA. Other states like NY have had laws on the books at one point or another requiring nonsense like datestamps and pre-ban components, CA does not have any requirements like that.

A link for what?

Quote:

So make sure you can swap one of the parts between the bx-25 and whatever else it was, problem solved.

If you need to the repair the magazine then it was probably already busted in the first place, it doesn't matter if you need to break the glue apart. I can take a USGI 30 round magazine and run it over with my car, then rebuild it. There is no language in the CA penal code that requires all of the parts to be intact to be able to repair it. Same thing would apply to any other magazine.

edit: Have you actually read the PC regarding magazines here in CA? If not I suggest you go do it, then follow the law as worded.

I thought rimfire guns were exempt from the AW ban? Why can't you use a BX-25?

rimfire rifles are exempt from the AW rifle feature ban, rimfire pistols are not exexmpt from the AW pistol feature ban.

usage of a BX-25 in a rifle shouldn't be an issue. But, for a pistol, use of a BX-25 might create an AW depending on the pistol.

And the magazine transfer laws apply to rimfire magazines as well (with some exemptions for tubular magazines, which a BX-25 is not).
