Body armor in church
I would like to hear your input on wearing body armor for those on their church security team.
I wear when I’m in charge of the parking lot and almost any time I’m on church ground Doesn’t it make sense if a lot of church shooting starts in the parking lot to be protected... My church understand and supports it a 100%. I don’t wear doing children ministry... Because we lock down the building... |

I haven't brought myself to the point of wearing body armor. I'm not saying it's not a good idea, but if I did I'd want to wear in all the time not just on security. The fact that summers in Fresno are almost unbearable even with normal clothes on, I can't imagine wearing it. If I was of a mind to wear it I'd want to wear it all the time. Like being armed you never know when you might need it. That's why I carry everywhere it's legal to do so.

I understand Fresno heat
Im going to a wedding in August in Fresno... this means wearing a tucked in shirt all day ...I’m thinking my Ruger LC in a ankle hostler for it .. I know I could pocket carry it but I hate even keys in my pocket wearing slacks... My everyday carry is my Glock 26 iwb... looking at the super tuck holster for the 26 as well

Sure. I don't think there would be a problem wearing it in church, as long as the church is supportive. Go for it.

No body armor here, but my briefcase is bullet proof. I can't see any reason why anyone would have a problem with body armor on someone in the security detail. Of course, looks make a difference. If you look like Navy Seal about to deploy to remote Afghanistan for a week, then you may be overdoing it.

The "Uncle Mike's" briefcase is what I use. I like their discrete body armor and may get some one day...

If it makes you more comfortable in your brain, then there is no reason not to wear it.

Funny you say that.. Last year I did add more more fire extinguishers and smoke detectors in all the buildings... Most Sundays I have 9 family members in church. 4 if then are my grandchildren. I have a lot to lose if things go bad.

This is an interesting thread to me. Is it common for larger churches to have security teams? I assume some or most are armed? Scenarios like these are interesting to me, because I do tend to think that often times appearances matter and like, symbolically, it's a curious issue with the church.
Without knowing anything about anything here, can I suggest that such teams make it a point to have IFAKs and know how to use them, if they don't already? |

We didn't have the A/C on for Sunday School today. Seemed still cool enough to open the doors/windows. But, during the 2nd half, I was clearly getting hot and started to sweat a bit. After, several people told me I should've taken my suit coat off! I explained why I couldn't and they all took it in stride. Most of them never noticed / knew that I was carrying every Sunday! They thought it was great that I did. I couldn't imagine how warm I would've been with body armor too. That's a serious consideration for Sacramento summers wearing a suit!

With all that in place, God is on the throne and I count on His protection too. My prayer, every time I put the CCW on my belt, is that I never have to use it - that He'll protect us. But, if He wants me to use, that He guide my thoughts and actions righteously. Are you paranoid? No. I feel we're appropriately prepared and so I'm ready but still at peace. I don't give up my joy for these things!

We have a couple of off-duty officers for security who carry and wear body armor and generally look like cops. We also have volunteers on a security team, but they don't wear armor. Some are also off-duty cops and so they carry, but no armor. Interesting idea though.
