Carry gun outside in front of my apartment to protect from coyotes?

Hey guys,
I'm sorry if this is kind of a stupid question:

So, I have a puppy that I'm house training and have to take outside at all hours of the night. I live in the Hollywood Hills and these coyotes are getting way too brave. There have been several times that they have gotten within 20-30 feet of me before I even know they are there. In fact, they are howling right outside my window as I type this.

I don't own the property where I live. I'm in a rented apartment.

I don't want them attacking my puppy or me. I obviously can't go outside with a shotgun because my neighbors would call in the swat team and FBI haha. I also don't want to get busted for carrying a pistol (Beretta Px4 9mm, full size) without a CCW.

What are my options? Just start carrying a baseball bat?

Golf club. You can't carry a firearm in the commons area or in front of your apartment legally unless you have a CCW.

ya my sister in law is a veterinarian and every week she is stitching up dogs and cats that are attacked by coyotes. However, she has never heard a single owner claiming that they were personally attached. Unless they are literally starving to death they won't attack a person ( as a general rule most animals won't attack something larger than them)

I have coyotes literally across the street from me that will just stare and me and my 30 lb. dog. I was debating awhile back, trying to semi suppress (custom shroud) a high caliber/ velocity air rifle but instead i decided not to spent way too much money and i just deal with it.

If you keep your dog on a leash I doubt you will have any problems with the yotes.

Pepper or bear spray as discussed...another cheap alternative is some wasp or hornet spray. That will spray a good 20'.

Fill a water gun with wolf urine, and when the coyotes approach, give them a couple squirts. Alternatively, you can sprinkle wolf urine on your clothing and they'll stay away. This place has what you need: http://www.thepeemart.com/

You obviously have no idea how difficult it is to get a CCW permit in Los Angeles County. You have to write up the reason why and I can guarantee the Sheriff will not allow you to get a permit for coyote protection. The VAST MAJORITY of permits issued in L.A. Last week my wife chased of a 'yote that had our little dog pinned down in our driveway. Last month, our old sheltie never came back when she let him out in the morning. Now, I've finally convinced her not to walk out the door without a gun. I've got to get rid of the rouge coyote soon. I hope to spend a little time trying to call it in this weekend.

Op- I live in the area, you are basically SOL with that one. Like someone suggested maybe a cheapie paintball gun or color an airsoft pistol yellow or something. But definitely a cane or golf club will help defend

pee on the next coyote you see. your urine will inspire them to put the word out you are not to be messed with! seriously though, there are a great many options as mentioned, first in my mind would've been pepper spray, if you're really a mean-hearted bastard you could get bear mace and really F their day up, or just throw a rock at them. alternatively you could get a really large dog. coyotes don't mess with huge dogs. what it comes down to is that for the most part, coyotes are not terribly large and generally don't attack people. some may feel they are being targeted when the coyotes try to eat their little kicker dogs, but that's not what really is going on. anyhow, good luck, never been good at training puppies.

Taser if within 10 feet, just have to turn it sideways gangsta style for canines. Pretty effective. Pepper spray (heh, bear spray even better).

And all canines hate fire extinguishers and are horribly afraid of road flares.
Meanest dog on earth won't close if you have a road flare, coyotes aren't any different.

Couplt things to add.

Make sure your puppy's leash and collar secure. Also, bear spray shoots about twice the distance of pepper spray. Just something to consider.

I'd be worried about overspray hitting the pup with bear spray. That stuff will make a grown man tear up just standing next to it.

It will blind dogs. Be careful.

Up here in Eastern WA, the coyotes get hungry during the cold, snowy winter. They go after things they have no business trying to eat. When I was a kid, maybe 12 y/o, one attacked a friend of mine and as he ran across the field back to my house trying to get away from it, my dog shot out from the house and saved his butt and chased the coyote away. She was a large, smart, dedicated dog. Still, we were lucky to never lose her or the other dog to coyotes. Lots of stories of a single coyote luring dogs away from their home and then, before the dog knows it, it's surrounded by a dozen coyotes and it doesn't make it home

OP -- keep your dog safe! Don't break the law.

This is the best advice out of all the suggestions, IMO. A golf club is quick, light, and can deliver damage from a distance.

Come out to Arizona where we respect your rights. Don't carry without a CCW, especially in CA. Doing so is just asking for trouble. A big walking stick steel pipe would serve you well in CA.

Contact the federal trapper for your area. Explain the situation just as you did here. Explain you are not worried about yourself you understand coyotes are only a threat to your dog. Ask them if they can remove the coyote as a threat to your dog?

Sick or old coyotes that can no longer hunt or are just lazy from eating dogs and dog food left out not to mention the idiots that feed coyotes. These animals can carry diseases that can be transferred from animal to humans and the ticks can also be left behind to attach to your pup carrying disease.

Ex-roommate carried mace when he walked the dog at night. Had to use it one night on a coyote, it worked amazingly according to him.
