Default Picked up a new vepr from Atlantic...

Vepr Review

I believe the day the Red Jacket Magwell converted Veprís appeared on Atlanticís website I ordered one. At this point in my AK collecting, I have quite a few Ďregularí AKís, and Iíve started to branch out. A vepr has been on my list of Ďakís to buyí, but since Iíve only started buying guns in the last few years, I missed out on buying veprs when they were cheaper.

My intended uses for this rifle are:

1) Having a vepr in the safe
2) Assassinationof high-value paper targets

On to the review.

The box:
The box is rather colorful, with English on one side, and Russian on the other. For the ĎI keep it new in the boxí crowd, Atlantic sent the molot box to my FFL inside of another box, but the Molot box was still beat up some. Considering how many places this rifle has been before coming to me, I expected that. Iíll probably cut off the big ĎVEPRí logo from the box & hang it on my man-cave wall.

Accessories:

The rifle came with 1 ten round tapco magazine, a Russian cleaning kit, oil bottle, and instructions. Bullet button was installed on the rifle. There was also a Red Jacket warranty card. Iím not sure what a free state would have received, probably some high-caps, but itís still more than I received with my SGL-21.

The Rifle:

Itís outstanding. Not a single one of the akís or ak part kits I have compares when it comes to fit & finish, machining, etc. Pictures don't do the rifle justice.

This was the first AK Iíve purchased that didnít have a selector scratch on it, and there was barely any wear on the carrier from going over the hammer. Iíve since put the scratch on it, but it took quite a few safe on/offís to do it. The finish itself seems more durable than what came on my SGL-21, but I doubt itís as tough as the duracoat I have on another AK (not sure, either way Iím more than happy).

The wood on this rifle is very nice, and so is the checkering.

As far as the magwell conversion, other than the bullet guide, you canít tell that Red Jacket did any work to the rifle. The fixed stock AK105 they put together for me has ran perfectly for me, so I have no doubt that their work on my VEPR was well done.

This rifle is not like any other AKís - itís in a class of itís own. Iíve seen other people make that comment about a VEPR, and it feels goofy to type, but itís true. It is also very clear that the rifle was put together with great attention to detail.

The only thing about the rifle that seems a bit odd was the sights. The front sight appears to be thinner than a typical AK sight post, and the rear sight is a windage adjustable RPK site, but there are only elevation marks for 100, 200 & 300m. Iím not sure if the front sight is a RPK sight, but it should help with accuracy when using the iron sights.

I really canít wait to shoot it. Iím hoping to be able to take it out soon, but with a new baby, itís hard to squeeze in time to head to the range.

For the Ďnew in the boxí crowd, there were two rivets that had scratches on them, there is a sliver of finish missing from under the gas tube lever, and there is a wear mark on the front of the handguard. This is probably from shipping, and would have happened anyway after a few trips to the range. You really need to look to find them.

Summary/Cliff Notes:

The VEPR is a factory gun that has custom builder quality to it. In fact, I would say that the VEPR has a higher build quality vs a good chunk of the rifles Iíve handled in store lately. I really couldnít be happier with my purchase, except of course that whole shooting it thing. I will be buying the 7.62x54R version when it's available (assuming I have the $$), and hopefully the 5.45 version as well (again, need the $$).

Pics!

The Phillips head screw in the bullet guide instead of a rivet.. is that normal or was it added later a la a Saiga conversion?

I love the spotwelds on the receiver and wish my SGL-21 had welds that nice.. actually I wish my SGL21 had welds you could see.. period!

here's a pic of my spotweld less SGL

Nice Gun, waiting for a range report, BTW you can use your rear sight way beyond the 300m mark; The ramp the rear sight rides on is the same as original AK with 1000m, just make some mark on the leaf same distance as 100m, 200m, 300m and you are ready to go.

I asked it it was normal for a Molat built AK variant to have a screwed in guide or was it added later a la a Saiga conversion.

It seems you're telling me it was added in as a conversion because of all the AKs I've built, owned, handled and shot the only ones that didn't have a riveted bullet guide were Saigas, I've never seen a Vepr before.

As for how you rivet in a bullet guide into a Saiga check out this link.

All's you gotta do is fill in that small bit of thumbhole with some stiff fitted cardboard or something, and the bullet button can come off? I dunno. It's a question, not trying to be a smart *** or anything.

if your in a free state, the thumb hole stock is great for shooting prone (it acts as a great pivot point) or chin checkin fools

personally, i love it!
