Signed! The blm needs to back off. There is plenty of open area, but so few designated shooting areas. It's ridiculous.

One of our favorite spots! We just posted on our Instagram with about 11k reach, hopefully our friends will repost and pass it on so we can try to keep it open.

OP, how do you know the BLM is trying to close the range. Have they officially posted something to that effect. We have been doing clean ups there for about 5 years and work with them to do so. The rangers have told us the reason it stays open is because of our efforts.

Please provide any official information by them that they are intending to close the site to the public. Thank you.

I'm thinking that the OP may be of the mindset that a petition may be enough to change the BLM's decision to close SP temporarily during fire season, which CalFire designates yearly as a precautionary measure to insure the publics safety and conserve firerighting resources.

Closing SP for fire season is an inconvenience, but makes sense.

I haven't seen any evidence on the BLM website of plans to permanently close SP.

I agree with the bolded. During one of our early cleanups and when shooting was permitted, a young guy drove up the hill and returned in about 15 minutes at a rather rapid pace and left the area. Within seconds of him doing so, I heard a ranger's radio (we were putting the trash in the dumpster at the bottom of the hill) state something about a fire. We looked up the hill and could see black smoke.

I found out later that even tho this guy had been instructed by a ranger and later, some Calgunners, not to shoot in a certain area due to the large number of rocks, he did so anyway. One of the bullets hit a rock, ricocheted into some dry brush and started a fire. That's why, of course, I saw him rapidly drive downhill. He was attempting to escape

IIRC, there were approx. 7-9 fire rigs and a helicopter that responded to put the fire out. The helicopter made about 10 fire drops, obtaining water from the nursery area nearby.

He was caught and when I asked the ranger by me what kind of bill he would get, he said probably $75K.

The point being, even when the range is open, there is still a danger of fire; especially when someone does something stupid and dangerous.

There should be a free use fire extinguisher out there. And we could clear the bigger rocks away from the impact area. That should help it stay open.

Oh Emm Gee!

You can be serious! A "free use" fire extinguisher wouldn't last a week!

Those idiots cant read well placed "No Shooting" signs, and they use them as targets/target stands. These same idiots shoot at rocks, drink while shooting, and follow zero safety rules!

They'd surely use the extinguisher as a target too!

PLEASE REMEMBER: It isn't just Steele Peak that it closed for fire season, it's nearly all BLM land and forestry land in So Cal. While an inconvenience to some, it is a necessary evil!

Well said. They should have a basic IQ test to able to shoot there. I only go mid week just before sunset, just to be safe. The idiots there are unbelievable.
