What's in you garden?
It's time to start getting your garden ready for spring planting.
This is my garden from 2010. I have six raised beds with the corn behind. The tall posts and dead area along the fence is for wine grapes. Not pictured with a close up below are Jalapeños, Brocolini, Cilantro, Blood Orange, Mandarins and Carrots. I planted two types of corn about twenty five days apart in maturity. I planted eighty feet of Blackberries and Raspberries. Garlic has already been harvested. My bell peppers are small. Pumpkin. Squash I built a rock wall. one side is a grass loading ramp the other is stuffed with high heat perennial strawberries. I love the look of espalier fruit trees. I cut holes in my driveway and used keg buckets for root barriers. I planted two Apples, Apricots, and Peaches. I hid some Onions in the front yard. |

I only have kamote on my backyard. We use the leaves for making sour soap, or just boil the leaves and then dip it in fermented shrimp. You can dig up the roots and gather the sweet potato. A very good survival plant.

I grow my entire garden in buckets on my little cement patio. I will take pictures this year so I can post up. Still waiting for the sun to hit on the patio a bit more before I plant. Corn, potatos, beans and tomatos last year. I tried cucumbers but they didn`t do very well.

I plan on tomatoes (3-4 kinds), bell peppers (3 colors), sweet onions, jalepeno and Sorranto peppers, basil (2-3 kinds), oregano, tarragon, mint, celantro, dill, chives, and zucchini. The zucchini will be my first attempt, and yes, I do have squirrels....
Growing your own stuff is very fun and tastes sooooo much better than the store bought items. I'll probably wait until mid-March to get things going.

I live in the city and have a small backyard. I grow Beets, tomatoes, strawberries, chives, green peppers, jalapenos, wheat grass (indoors), and alot of lettuce (two types), and spinach. It's actually really easy. I don't retain as much food as it sounds, but it's really fun and my plants are chocked full of miracle grow so they produce!

I'll risk it its between the lawn and the side walk. When ever I miss a bulb it sprouts a while later. I pull it up, divide it and replant. I do grow my horseradish in a container.

We got her at the SD reptile supershow last july but forgot to ask about b-day. I guess about 6 weeks then, so about 9-10 months now. Shes a red/gold from Sandfire dragon ranch in Bonsall. The red faded away We had to feminize her name. They said it was a male.

Planted a couple trees last year, fig and apricot. Also got a Thomspon seedless vine in. Have a mature pear, two large macadamia trees, and a tiny garden. Probably 6 tomato plants, a hill each of zucchini and crookneck, a few taters, onions, basil, bok choy, peas, greenbeans, etc. My front yard is about 15ft by the length of the house, maybe 50ft, and the backyard is about 6 to 8ft by the length of the house. Thinking about some chickens, but need to consult the neighbors first...

I'm getting my bed ready now...
Over the weekend I set up a 32'x3' raised bed on top of the retaining wall on one side of my back yard. Next weekend I'll start work on 2 more similar beds on the other side of the yard. Plans are to plant a whole bunch of spinach in about 2 weeks and replace it with bush beans and pole beans after harvest sometime in May.

Sorry, haven't updated my location in a couple years. I live in Ventura County now...
The trees produce a lot of nuts, but the squirrels harvest them before they are ready. Probably need to get rid of the squirrels. The nuts are also a lot of work. They need to be dried for a few days, but not too hot, then you have to get them out of their incredibly tough shell then toast them lightly in the oven. |
