Default PTR-44: STG-44 clone

Looks like PTR is making an STG-44 clone. If they can make a bullet button, it looks like it would be another nice off list rifle:

http://www.ptr91.com/about.html

Also looks like another company is trying to make a SA-80 clone:

I'd love to have one of those, but I'd have to gear up to support another caliber.

Where would you get ammo for the STG clone?

EDIT-
Privi still makes some.

I want one bad. It's cheaper than IO's $4995.00. I have a extra mag release to make a bb out of it and keep the original. Shouldn't be hard to do.

It'd certainly be nice if they're able to offer these in another caliber... (.223 rem or 5.45x39?).

There is supposed to be one made in .22 but apparently not sold in the US.

How is it that they can import this but not import other cool guns with pistol grips and such things?

I believe they are being made here and are not being imported. That's the only way to get around the import ban.

Would be very interested, but a $4K price makes it a non-issue. If they can get something for around $1.5K, then it becomes a possibility...

no it will be original 7.92x33 or 8mm kurz. its shorter than 7.62x39 and those wouldnt fit in the mags.. plus why buy a stg clone if it wasnt the original round?

the $4200 is the low price rumor ive seen on a few different websites.

How about WW2 German FG42 replica?

http://www.fg42.us/FG42%20Model%20II_gallery.html

Only 11k per piece. Put on a solar tactical grip for a featureless rifle.

I'll be getting one if they can make it in 7.62x39. There was a Canadian company that made them in that caliber.

Why are these always so expensive, is it because of the novelty? Everything is stamped and even if the internals were machined it still wouldnt cost anywhere close to the asking price. So im guessing that the manufacturing costs are somewhere in the 1K range due to a low production run and that is on the high end. Where does the other 3K come from? For 4K you can buy an original MP44 parts kit and get an aftermarket semi auto receiver. You would then have the real thing. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=140496338

Here is the one that is available to the Canadians http://www.marstar.ca/gf-SSD/SSD-BD-MP44.shtm

In US dollars that comes out to just over $2500 if you can get the Canucks to ship us one

A grip fin would be the easy way to bring this rifle into CA.

It comes down to economy of scale. Notwithstanding the current craze (which looks to be waning somewhat), AK-type and AR-type rifles are relatively affordable only because everyone and their brother makes them, and in such large numbers--that is what drives the price down. AK's in particular are (normally) inexpensive because there is a wealth of imported parts kits floating around.

Yes, from a cursory glance the construction is fairly similar to an AK, with mostly stamped parts. But you have to remember there is a large initial investment cost in obtaining/making the tooling, sourcing parts etc. and the manufacturer has to recoup that somehow. Someone "producing" AK's is generally bending receiver flats and riveting together parts kits, so the really cost-intensive tooling and machining has been done for them.

But, you are certainly correct in that it's definitely a lot to pay for "cool factor," since they aren't historical pieces. Hopefully there will be a large interest so the price comes down closer to $1,000. Then you can put my name on the list

BUMP

Does anybody have one of these?
If it follows the original design, the upper will be pinned to the lower, so you can not bring it in to the state disassembled.
The mag button would be pinned in also, so you can take it apart and put in a bullet button.
The design of the grip would lend itself to getting bat winged and go featureless, but somebody would have to batwing it out of state before shipping in.
Does this / can this PTR44 take an original MP44 mag? Or did they change those dims?

Any input or experience would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure either a member here or on surplusrifle has a CA legal version of one of these with my kydex grip making it featureless. Search around and you'll find it. -Ben

The one mentioned in posts above is mine.
Original thread is here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=260730
Used an airsoft MP44 to make a grip fin and sent it to Freakshow for installation. I have preban original WWII mags and they work better than the mags that come with the gun, so featureless was the only way to go.

The bad news (other than the the $5K price) is that all 200 rifles that were imported have been sold, and no more will be imported. Secondary market is the only way to get one now.

There is a very long thread on the G/K43 forums that chronicles the release of the PTR44: http://www.gk43forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9617

Mag issues discussion is here: http://www.gk43forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9918
