There might still be BLM fire restrictions in place.

Default Alternate Locations

My Son wants to visit Calico Mine this winter. Any suggestions for alternate locations near there? We want to plink with a couple 22 rifles and a 9mm pistol.

Thanks,

DG

I have been by Hodge almost every weekend since the BLM ban discussion thread, and the place has been packed.

So, that's not BLM land or there has been no enforcement.

Yes. Donít get a flat tire. The closest tire shop will tell you that you need all four replaced.

Zoom in on Hodge Road, yellow shaded area is BLM. You tell me, the yellow extends west of freeway, but not much, so....? I am thinking they are picking their battles, bunch of homies with guns, or a family out plinking. Who would you drive up on and harass?

Advice? Sure, here's the best advice in this thread. Assuming you have a truck, or something capable of driving on a dirt road.....DON'T use Hodge road off the i15.

Enter off Rt 66, also called the "National Trails Highway" at that location. Look at the map. You can drive in from Barstow on 66 then pull off on your right on Hodge. Drive in anywhere from a .25 mile to a couple miles and find yourself a nice isolated spot.

Alternatively, enter off the 15, but don't stop where all the people are. Just keep going, right through the middle till you find a nice spot all by yourself.

If you don't have anything capable? Go early. Like 8am or 9am at the latest.

Make sure you submit to headquarters your app for the hodge road live fire badge.

Hodge road is a relatively safe place. It may seem like the Wild West but actually very few incidents there.

Now, go east to where all the atv riders go and we can talk carnage.

Stay in the teal area on this map and itís legal to shoot 24/7, if BLM ever lifts the restrictions. Thereís plenty of space off Ft. Irwin Rd. before you get to the Army base.

Hodge Rd , I recall someone posting a property map, showing is not BLM but private property

A lot of people just go there to shoot

The deeper berms to the far west seem safer. But verify with the county property map

And take some cones and place them like about 50 each way of your vehicle. For some reason ppl love to just park 5 feet from you and start shooting like they are you brothers

Thought I read online a few months ago that someone caught a .30 caliber bullet up there. Guess it came from a long way away though and he survived.
