First revolver, GP100 4in SS
Made an impulse buy today, a Ruger GP 100 4in that is stainless steel. Last time I fired a revolver was 3+ years ago.
Really liked the build quality, finish, and 357 magnum, plus now I don't have to listen to women complain about how all they can shoot with me are semi-autos handguns Out of curiously, how does the 6in compare to the 4in? Anyone carry the 4in? Anything else you can say about the pistol would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats! I hope you'll love it! 357 magnum is such a fun round to shoot.

I had a GP100 stainless 6". That thing was dead-nuts accurate. I regret selling it. Wouldn't mind another GP100 in my collection though.. but in exactly what you got (stainless 4").
The 6" model definitely looks extremely vulgar. 4" model I feel, is better balanced. Even though my 627 either weighs more or is about the same weight as the GP100 in 6".. it feels lighter simply by virtue of being better balanced. Think you made the right choice for an overall revolver. I'd only get the 6" for hunting or target shooting. |

I bought a GP100 4" SS in Nov. 08 as my first hand gun and have enjoyed it since the first day I shot it. I have changed the springs and did some polishing and now the action is nice and smooth and lite. The one thing you might want to do if your going to let the ladies shoot is get some 38s for it so they don't freak out when they shoot the 357s. Enjoy, have fun and be safe.

Its a great revolver. I have the 6" blue version and I can hit a plastic gallon jug full of water off-hand at 40 yards with it and I'm a very average shot. With everyone running around buying up all the semi-autos getting a good old fashioned revolver is a good move right now IMO. I still see a good number of them at my local shops. Good luck.

Congrats. My dad bought a GP100 4" in 1991 and gave it to me last year before he passed away. It's my favorite gun for sentimental reasons. It has shot many thousands of rounds but it still looks brand new to me.

The 6" is easier to be accurate with because of the longer sight radius but with practice the 4" will do fine.

Nice pickup. If you look around you might be able to find some .38 special reloads that would be a lot cheaper than shooting .357 magnum. If you are going to be range shooting a lot I'd look at getting a speed loader and some type of loading block to go with it. The best purchase I got after my 686+ was a 5 star speed loader and their block.

The GP is a great revolver and it'll likely outlast all your other guns by a healthy margin. I have two and call them my "end of the line" guns because after everything else has bitten the dust, they'll still be ticking along.

Even if you don't reload right now.. I'd encourage you to save all the brass now. I regret not doing so when I got my GP100. Could have thousands of more precious brass now that I reload.

And it is very EASY to save the brass since you don't have to pick it up off the floor!

Well well well got a GP100 did ya. Good for you, if you're like me you'll have more than one. I have 3. A 4" SS .357 Magnum, a 6" Blue .357 Magnum and a new(er) 4" SS .327 Magnum. To me the 4" or 6" are great shooters, doesn't matter to me about the weight from one or the other. However the
.327 (holds 7 rounds by the way) has just as much knock down power as the .357 but shoots straighter and less recoil.....great for women to shoot since you can also shoot 32 shorts or longs, 32 H&R Magnum and the .327 Magnum. If you ever get the chance to get a .327 grab it you'll see why quickly. |

Congrats on a great purchase!. I have a GP 100 in 4" stainless and it is by far my favorite handgun. I find it very accurate. I estimate I have put about 1500 rounds down the pipe and it shows very little wear. It is my choice for the nightstand with the proper ammunition.
