8/29/16 renewal with training cert. received by CCW office
12/6/16 permit expired
12/7/16 renewal approved
2/17/16 I asked for an appt. they told me to wait for them to contact me
I've been 3 months w/o a permit now. I'm a bit disappointed that some of you have sent in your renewals after me and have already gotten your new permits. Did my documents slip off the desk??

YES, they are NOT going to call you at this point. They've LOST your file. You need to call them up on the phone. NOBODY takes more than a month after approval to get card in hand. That's f'up.

At this point if I called or emailed and someone told me to wait...I'd say NO. Because something is wrong here.

Good Luck!

I was told after making them aware of a traffic ticket more than six months after submitting my renewal and w a i t i n g........ that they discovered that my file was "misfiled" and they had to do a search but found it. They called me the same day they found it and asked if I was available that afternoon for pick up. "YEP."

I'm so sick of waiting patiently. Posting my timeline as therapy for myself and others waiting.

10/29/2016 - Submitted renewal documents and GC over 3 months in advance of 02/04/2017 expiration (as instructed by OCSD website at the time).

10/31/2016 - receipt acknowledged by OCSD

01/20/2017 - Conditionally approved, training cert requested

01/23/2017 - Training cert faxed and emailed. Receipt acknowledged by OCSD

02/01/2017 - Emailed OCSD to let them know I will be expiring over the weekend and I can come in for pickup any time with short notice, If they get any cancellations, let me know.

02/02/2017 - Instructed to wait patiently for an appointment date in a few weeks

02/04/2017 - Permit expired.

03/06/2017 - Emailed OCSD to check status. Instructed to wait patiently, I am in the process of being scheduled for pickup.

03/14/2017 - Emailed select members of OC Board of Supervisors to praise OCSD on working hard to process renewals and new applications, but to address the staffing / funding issue creating delays.

I'm so sick of waiting. Good thing this license is just a fun little perk for hobbyists, not something important like a drivers license. (sarcasm)

Days without permit: 42 and counting.

I got an email today setting my pickup for next Thursday. I have an appointment and asked nicely if I could come in any time in the next four business days at their convenience, but if not, I will move my other appointment.

Wish me luck.

Brief timeline

Drop off renewal packet at OCSD, approx October 13-15

Permit expired Feb 13

Email sending me to training, Feb 28.

Training cert sent Feb 28

Email acknowledging receipt of training Mar 1

Email scheduling pickup March 18.

Tentative pick up date, March 23.

Hopeful pick up date- March 18, 19, 20, or 21.

About a month without a permit. But not complaining. I'm glad we have a great CCW staff.

You got it easy. Been waiting over 6 weeks since they confirmed receipt of training for me.

You need to send an email or call.
You are lost in the pile.
If you were told to do training, they lost your cert at this point.

Agreed. Email for status. Two weeks from cert to pickup email is the rule of thumb at this point.

Make some noise politely.

Be firm but be polite. You're not the first this has happened to. They're overwhelmed. Sucks but good luck and post up what happens!

Submitted renewal with GC - 11/4/16
Permit Expired - 2/4/17
Conditional approval - 2/28/17
Training faxed in - 3/8/17
Email setting pickup date - 3/17/17
Pickup date 3/23/17

I didn't really check on updated timelines for most of the duration of my CCW. Heard from a friend a little too late that they are now suggesting submitting renewal paperwork 6 months out. Went with the 3 months they had initially told me anyway. Permit expired. Almost 5 months to renew from submission to pickup. I'm glad they set the pickup date when it is, because I wouldn't be able to pick it up during working hours from the following week forwards. I don't know how accommodating they are with rescheduling pickup appointments.

Question...

I just recently submitted my renewal packet. I proceeded with renewal class and shooting re-certification ahead of schedule because it wasn't that expensive, and a refresher on current laws is always a good thing.

Anyway, I've got my re-certification paperwork. Do you guys think it's okay for me to submit it now, or is OCSD going to have a fit with me jumping ahead of schedule not knowing if I'll get approved to proceed or not?

Thanks.

Pure speculation, I don't THINK it will upset them, but I would hang on to it. Then, in three or four months, submit it and ask for an update. It gives you a valid reason to reach out without it just being a request for status.

YMMV

Would you guys suggest hand delivering the packet to ocso? Or faxing the info over?

I don't have access to adobe, so can't re submit by email.

I'm a little bummed out after reading this thread, I was told to re-apply three months in advance of expiration. Ccw expires in June

OCSD prefers electronic as far as I could tell. I mailed them a copy anyway, but I would think they would have a harder time "losing" an electronic copy, but stuff happens...

You can take it to a Kinkos or Office Depot, etc. and ask them to scan them for you; just bring along a USB thumb drive.

I would wait till they give you the go-ahead to do the training then send it.

There's no reason not to send it. they can add it to your file and it gives you an excuse to ping them and see how it's going.

I realize that but their notification to do that is your confirmation that they have accepted your good cause and sending the cert at that time may prod things along a little more than sending now and hoping they continue on your file.

Just a thought.

You're welcome to stop by the office and use one of our many scanners, email it to yourself, and to them. In city of Orange.

I sent mine almost 6 mo in advance. They confirmed reciept in less than 24 hours so I know it's in process. I will get a training cert in within 60 days of expiration. I'm hoping to get renewed before my expiration.

I sent mine in usps registered mail. But if you have a smartphone there are also multiple apps that take a pic and save it as a PDF that you can then email. Even multiple page documents. I use iScanner and it works really well

It doesn't bother them. A lot of my clients have done what I did, came up on the renewal timeline, completed the paperwork, completed the training and submitted the whole thing at one time. Makes it easy on them.

I realize that many people are worried if they were issued under Self Defense and are now submitting under Good Cause, but my thought since OCSD wants to issue, most people are over thinking it. If money is tight you can go the step by step route. Otherwise the 4 hour refresh doesn't cost much, your talking a reasonable cost for ammo (even though prices are going up daily). Go get it done.

I sent it all in by e-mail, with a request they confirm they received it, which they did.

if your in the 6 month window, doing it now will be doing it latter depending on where your going to shoot the re-qual. Prado is really hot in July.

I buy reloads for much of my plinking ammo, and I have watched the price per 1,000 rounds $139 in October 2016, to $189 this past weekend in Del Mar, so it's likely to cost you a little more later anyway.

As Nike says, Just Do It, and do it all at one time.

I agree with others that say it's ok.

I renewed last year, sending my packet in electronically beginning about 6 months prior to my expiration. Even though I hadn't gotten conditional approval, I went ahead and scheduled a CCW renewal course ahead of time, and completed it (this was about a month before my CCW expir). I emailed a scanned copy of my cert, and acknowledged that I may be premature in doing so, and with the understanding I may have to take it again if it times out, but with the hopes it would expedite my file. I received confirmation of my file update for the cert, but no one yelled at me or anything for it.

From a paperwork perspective, I bet they appreciate a full file before approval so they wouldn't have to duplicate the work in re-review. I bet they ask you to wait until conditional approval so that people who don't meet criteria don't waste their time and money.

All dealings with OCSD have been top notch for me.

I hope in less than 2 years when mine comes up for renewal again they have a system that actually works in place.

I'm thinking part of the current delay is moving people from SD to another good cause. Unless they tighten their requirements next time around, what works now should work in two years.

Of course, I'm not sure when the next election is and if she plans to run again. Then it's anybody's guess as to what could happen. We could get someone who accepts SD or we can get someone who doesn't want to issue at all.

So I got my CCW under self defense 2 years ago, in the process they reached out and asked for supplemental good cause. So I gave them my reasoning other than self defense. Received my Ccw!

Fast forward to my renewal process, I sent in my packet and received an email back from the Ccw unit asking for supporting documentation of my good cause.

I sent them exactly what I sent in during my initial application for my renewal.

Am I assed out?

Thanks!

It sounds like your initial time you applied was already after OCSD was needing a good cause, and whatever you sent in then, worked since they issued you your CCW. So this time around, why shouldn't it work again?

Unless your situation changed of course (i.e. You transported valuables 2 years ago and now you don't anymore). That would be the scenario where your supporting docs from back then would NOT work this time around.

This is exactly how I feel about the response email, while nothing has changed on my end.

Don't give up, so quickly. I was in a similar situation, but I wasn't reached out for supplemental documentation for my initial good cause. However, during my renewal, they did and I wasn't confident in my good cause. With the help of a CGNer, I received my conditional approval soon after.
