Talking Noob to shotguns. Got an 870 Tactical in jail, now what?

Let me start off by admitting I don't know crap about shotguns. I finally decided to change that and see what I am missing. I found a nice 870 Tactical for sale, new, and got it sitting in jail now while I "cool off" lol. I don't think I will be adding anything to the gun, except maybe a shell holder and maybe a sling. Is there anything else I should be looking for? I have a 12 gauge brush but no jag, what's the best way to clean a shotgun bore?

What's the best way to practice for HD use? Should I be shooting a few boxes of slugs at regular bull targets or shooting buckshot or some other sized shot at clay pigeons or? Yes, I am lost in this area :-)

Now go buy a lot of ammo! Walmart have great prices for $23.97/100 rounds, then go shoot the hell out of it to get familiar with the gun!

Go to the range that is right in your back yard and learn from others who shoot.

Come to the next NorCal Clinic and learn a lot in one afternoon.

I'm a member at USI and shoot there all the time but somehow I still know nothing about shotguns

I will definitely be looking to sign up for one of these clinics, sounds like it is exactly what I need.

Pattern it with your chosen home defense load if that's what you plan on using it for. Shoot it at 5, 10, and 15 yards at man sized targets with your HD load, it's important to know what the gun will do.

I have one in jail too right now, also wondering what the preferred method is around here for cleaning? And does it need a cleaning as often as a handgun?

Only clean it -

If you want it to work the next time you pull the trigger...

Your 870 will run a long time between cleaning....I use a bore snake and some breakfree...I will "Lube" up the barrel with breakfree and let it sit while I take the bolt out and wipe it down and inside the receiver. Once this is done I will put a small amount of oil on the action bars and put it back together...Then I will finish up the barrel with the bore snake and put the shotgun back together....Never put any lube in the magazine tube...Only clean this out with a dry patch when needed.

I have put 200-300 rounds of bird shot through the old girl over a weekend without cleaning it while hunting and teaching Boy Scouts....

Take a tactical shotgun class.
* Pick up a certificate and go to Front Sight for a 4-day class
* Go take a shotgun class at Reed's indoor range in San Jose/Santa Clara with Louis Awerbuck--probably one of the top trainers when it comes to tactical shotguns.

Some old 870s probably haven't been cleaned since Nixon was president - I am sure they still work just fine - maybe a little rusty. I used two products to clean and lube my 870s - Remclean for the bore (remove the plastic crap in bore) and BreakFree CLP for everything else - lube and rust prevention - that's it!

A tactical light attached to the shotgun is probably a good advice.
and as mentioned above, attend a few shotgun classes.
