Default In praise of Smith & Wesson...

Last spring I bought this beautiful (used) S&W Model 29-3 .44 Magnum:

After firing enough rounds to fall totally in love with it, I sent the gun back to S&W for a fresh finish and a trigger job. Well, after five weeks they wrote back and told me that –horror of horrors! – the frame was cracked!! And, bottom line, they couldn’t repair it back to a safe condition.

Damn! I thought I was scrued to the tune of 900 clams... until they told me that since their products come with a lifetime guarantee, they would send me a brand-new revolver absolutely free... not even any shipping charge!

Well, you could’ve knocked me over with a feather... In this day and age, when it sometimes seems as if everything is cheap and designed to fall apart in a year or so, to think that a firearms company would stand out like this... simply incredible. And, true to their word, they delivered me this beauty, a stainless 629 Classic Deluxe:

Sweeeeet!! I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet because my indoor range has swamp coolers instead of AC and it’s still too bloody hot, but not for much longer... I can’t wait to try it out!

My hat’s off to S&W... they are a flat-out brilliant American company, and I will remain an admiring and loyal customer for however long I last.

That sir is Beautiful !

That said, the range I go to (but not all summer long) has A/C & still stupid hot in there.

I no longer go, if I'm gonna sweat, then the free use of outdoors is fine w/me, as I'll not pay for that !

Congrats on a nice firearm !

That's lovely! I have been hearing such things about S&W as well as Ruger. Good these companies are making things right for their customers, it really means a lot.

How did you work out receiving the new revolver? Because it is quite a different revolver, not even just a different serial number of the same model, did you have to work it out through a local FFL?

Exactly right... S&W shipped the new revolver to my FFL, then I had to DROS it and wait ten days to pick it up.

More than worth it, though!

I guess you'd have to ask S&W.

And yes, I'll still be on the lookout for a bright-nickeled classic like the one I lost... after all, a lady can never have too many 29's!

Nice to hear. I had to ship my Performance Center 327PD back to S&W about 5 years ago to address a light strike timing issue. They took it back no fuss, no drama, fixed it, and shipped it back to me with the original grips and threw in a set of the new-style Performance Center walnut grips as well.

Did they tell you where the crack was on the revolver?

No, they just said the frame was cracked, but didn't say where.

Do you think it was cracked when you got it?

There's no way for me to be absolute certain, but I imagine it was already cracked. I put very few rounds through it after the purchase... probably fewer than two dozen, and more of those were .44 specials than magnums.

Well, I finally got to test-drive the replacement 629 S&W sent me, and...

ZOWIE!!

Even just getting warmed up, I did reasonably well (for me, anyway!)

44 mag 240-grain RNFP at 20 feet... boy, what a sweet gun! And those Pachmayr American Heritage grips are the cat's meow. Let me tell you, I was one happy ol' gal... you betcha! Can't wait to go again.
