Norton is free for Comcast subscribers. Newer versions aren't bad. Older versions were a resource hog. I also back it up with malwarebytes.
I never pay full subscription price. There are always free (or cheap) after rebate deals from retailers like Frys, Staples or Amazon. Sent from my DROID2 using Tapatalk |

i didnt read a whole pages of posts, but everyones post should read to the effect of,
All Symantec and Norton products suck, and you should never let them near your system. All pay for AV products are only as good or worse then Microsoft Security Essentials.

I used to prefer AVG but it started giving us grief with our email system in our CRM software, new installs get avast, and i have had no problems with either keeping systems safe. our old machines running mcafee are the problem causers.......i love wiping them and getting mcaffee off of there.

I've been using Avast for years and won't use anything else on my personal systems. Lightweight, with the ability to detect hijacked websites and can see into the email and P2P/IM protocols. On (rare) occasion I've used it in conjunction with MS Essentials and not had any conflicts with it.
Years ago I quit using Norton/McAfee/Symantec etc on my home systems, they all grew into bloatware about 10 years ago. |

Ccleaner, malwarebytes, Microsoft security essentials. Am I redundant? Is it silly? M

MSE, Avast, AVG and Panda cloud are all pretty good for free anti. But definitely get Malwarebytes as back up (keep it up to date). If any one of anti failed, just reboot in safe mode and run malwarebytes.

Kapersky Internet Security Version 11.x.x.xxx
I use Kapersky on my older Tecra (Windows XP Pro). I tried Microsoft Security Essentials, but, could not handle the requirement for automatic updates. Microsoft seems to need two tries to get a update right. Don't want that to be automatic. Malwarebytes is run when I do an update.
For my old IMAC G4, I use Intego protection (firewall, AV, AS). Intego has been making software for Apple products for over a decade. Never a problem with it. Both are backed up with hardware firewalls at work and at home (Netgear UTM10). I feel safe with everything filtered twice. When I travel, the software protection provides some safety.

ESET NOD32 if you dont mind paying for it.
Microsoft Security Essentials if you want free. Both are good. I converted from Kaspersky few years back to ESET. At the time, their product was a bit heavy. But I would try it again... |

I have seen Norton 360 fail to allow basic network access (even pings), and will sometimes fail to allow Internet access for no reason at all.
An uninstall resolves this issue. I have seen this ten times in the last 4 years. I always disable 360's firewall if a hardware firewall (router) is in place... I had Symantec Enterprise AV catch an attached virus from an e-mail that stated something like "Scanned with Panda Anti-Virus." I verified that he was using Panda, and told him to use something else... Last edited by the86d; 04-17-2012 at 4:15 AM.. |

Webroot Anywhere
I just switched to Webroot SecureAnywhere. It had one of the highest detection rates out of this years crop of antivirus software and it has a very small memory footprint. So far it seems to be pretty good. PCMAG Review
That's a provably false statement. Many AV programs do better in independent testing.

+1 for ESET. Been with them since day one. As stated earlier it's not a resource hog and therefor it doesn't chew up your processor and memory usage. They also include a web filter as well so if you happen to go to a non-trusting site, it will block it if it's a bad website and will alert you stating it's an unsafe sight that has been blocked. Pretty effective too. No complaints. I think it's about $45 per year for 3 computers. Which is worth it you can set it up on your kids pc, wifes pc, etc. OH AND MOST IMPORTANT! I remember a while back I had problems with compatability with norton and another app. Have yet to face that with ESET. Well worth it and never had to call in for support. It's very effective. Hope this helps.
