Default 17hmr

I was wondering if there are any up sides to owning a 17 over a 22lr besides price. i dont really care about the price of ammo at least you can find it on shelves and it seems pretty deadly on youtube videos. I was wondering if any owners would step up and tell me about hunting with these lil guys.

I love the 17HMR.
Drops the game one shot very time, Bang Flop, well sometimes Bang Splat
If you want to eat your critters like I do, you need to head shoot them or all you get is guts splattering everywhere.
Also the 17 bullet does not drop like a hot rock like the .22lr does.
Sight in for 100 yds and your good to go.
Usually you sight a .22lr in at 50yds and with that you will get about 8" of drop, no so with the 17HMR.
I have shot hundreds of squirrels and some rabbits, like I said take head shots so as not to ruin the meat.

my first firearm is was a 17hmr, and i couldnt have been happier. while its not as cheap as a 22lr for ammo you can have more fun shooting it at longer range. you will enjoy showing it of to your friends by completely blowing up an can or water bottle. with that said if you can wait a bit longer winchester is going to be coming out with a new cartridge called 17 winchester super magnum. this will the the most powerful rimfire yet. 20gr bullet at 3000fps and ammo will be around 15 for 50, and savage will have a rifle chambered in it called the b.mag. the b.mag looks like their centerfire rifle and is a really beefy rimfire rifle, it has rear locking lugs and the rifle weights about 4lbs. either way you cant go wrong. savage has a nice 17hmr rifle and the acutrigger is nice. i vote get both, you can get a marlin 795 for really cheap if you want to do a lot of plinking and a 17hmr if you want to go target shooting or varmint hunting.

you will enjoy shooting your 17 hmr, 0 recoil, and its nice seeing your target explode when u shoot it vs just make holes like a 22.

There is no downside to owning a .17HMR. Best price for ammo that I have found is midsouthshooterssupply.com, around $10/50 + shipping. Same price that I pay for mid-grade .22lr target ammo.

You will thoroughly enjoy shooting the .17hmr. Flat and powerful for such a small projectile. I too have a Savage 93 - it is so fun to shoot. BUT, get both if you can.

I use mine for chucks out to 175 yards. At a hundred yards, it hits them as hard as a golf club, at 175 it is substantially less efficient and tends to pencil through..... I use my 223 past 175yd.

~85 yards- stone dead on contact

~130 - didn't move an inch

Which scope is that on there. Right now I have a 6x18 bushnell on it. Are the sweet 17 scopes any good or should I just stick with the bushnell it has the 50mm objective

Mixed reviews on the Sweet 17 Scopes on Rimfirecentral.com. They seem to be hit and miss on quality. I tend to stay away from scope made in China with the exception of Mueller which has a good reputation and exceptional customer service. My favorite scopes for the $$$ are the Weavers.

If you can buy both, I love my .17 for the splat factor but its nice to have a 10/22 also. jump shooting rabbits with a 10/22 is about the best practice you can get.

You could buy a CZ455 with both 22LR and 17HMR barrels.

17s are great. You can get great distance with a small round. Very accurate and great for hunting. I hope to own one someday soon. IMO, a great option compared to .22lr.

It's a nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x40. I only use mine for hunting, but some guys who shoot paper usually like a 6-18x....for me, 4.5-14 is fantastic, no issues.

so i shot it this weekend at sac valley and i love the thing. me and my father in law were shooting 1 in groups at the worst with the 17 gr v max but the 20 grain winchester super x was all over the place by that i mean 2 inch groups. but i bought 1000 rds for 220. so i have plenty of range ammo.

Excellent shooting there. Why not join us in the Monthly Rimfire Matches here on Calguns. Heck we even offer prizes.

I bought a CZ 452 varmint in 17hmr not long after the round was introduced and wow it still blows me away how devastating that little round is.

Yeah now I'm just waiting to find a place to go kill some critters. I can't really find anything near San Jose.
