Aimpoint Comp M4(s) vs M5
So after the great advice on my ACOG thread I've decided to use my Mark AR Mod 1 1.5-4x as a service competition scope moving it from my lw carbine to my HBAR.
Now the LW carbine gets some love. I've got a sweet line on a "good buddy" discount on an Aimpoint. I enjoyed my M68 in service and it looks like the Comp M4 is the current M68. But, if my number counting thing is correct 5 comes after 4, so is 5 the latest and greatest? What improvement, if any does the 5 offer over 4. Or should I go with "s" in the 4 with a low battery compartment? They are close enough in price not to matter to me on that front. |

Comp M5 runs a AAA battery and can use any of the Micro mounts, more compact than the Comp M4
Comp M5 "Clear Aperture" is 18mm (4nvd and 6 daylight settings) Comp M4 "Clear Aperture" is 23mm (7nvd and 9 daylight settings) -Matt S.

Thanks Matt, what kind of feedback have you guys had on the M5 holding up on the micro-mounts as opposed to the older full size mounts? I have little experience to draw from regarding micro style mounts. I used a cheap utg riser on a Bushnell TRS 25, but only briefly.

I like my M4.
Built like tank, strong like bull! The AA bats fit in to my sop of only using AA batts in lights and radio gear. 1 type of batt to buy/charge. No experience with M5, but the Aimpoint rep is solid. Sent using a long string and 2 Dixie cups

The Comp M5's have been holding up extremely well, they are made of the toughest aluminum used on the Aimpoint 7075 vs. 6061, they have an additional window in the front to protect the objective lens and the ability to use the micro mount of its choice makes it a winner IMO. We've had great luck with American Defense micro mounts and now also carry Scalarworks which seems to be that lightest mounts yet extremely robust.

There are an amazing amount of high quality mounts at various and mostly very reasonable prices so I am a big fan of anything that uses that mount footprint. Takes up less rail space, lighter weight, and more height options compared to M4 setup. -Matt S.

I don't think they will release an M5s version since they won't be compatible with Aimpoint Micro mounts.

The double A question was something that popped in my head as an advantage, but AAA has become more common than ever. I can see wanting to keep all kit running on the same though.

Considering the lack of frequent batt changes the AA vs AAA would not be a problem.
Batt life on my M4 seems to be a little short of forever. I do change batt every 2 years or there abouts. Makes me feel better. Sent using a long string and 2 Dixie cups

While I don't have an M4, I have a PRO and a T-2 Micro. I am torn between the larger and smaller apertures. If I had to get another one at this point, I would get an M5 just because of how much lighter the smaller tubed Aimpoints are. Besides that, I like using both the large and small tube optics on AR's.
