Just a tech, but not going to post my call sign on here. Your call sign shows your home address and we are(mostly) all gun owners. I’d prefer not to post my address on the internet to where I store my guns and ammo...

Good call. I got a PO Box solely so I could change my FCC address to the PO box... but their online license search system apparently still shows prior addresses registered to the license. You won't see me publish my callsign on any public forum.

Double-check that. When I search my callsign in the ULS, it does show my PO Box, but it also has a spot where any anonymous user can click on previous iterations of the license, thereby seeing my home address which was on my original application.

Ham test online is a great tool to use if you want to get your license or upgrade. I got my extra ticket today and it only took my three weeks using hamtestonline.com. Worth every penny. I do have an extra study guide if anyone is interested. Just pay shipping and its yours.

It's a great system. Put in an hour a day or 45/30 minutes whatever you can manage, and just go through the study mode. Even if you are getting the questions wrong keep going don't get discouraged. You will start catching on. Once you get about 90 percent through the material it will suggest you take the practice tests, and within days you will be amazed. I still can't believe I did it in three weeks.

And when you are ready to test go to hamcram.com and there is a testing session now in manteca or stockton every month. Walk in testing is free too.

Good luck in your studies

Agreed...I love their method of subject presentation followed by questions
I will stick with the course to the end having paid for it...

My wife is using a different method, taking different practice tests over and over and over and over...she's already at 27 out of 35 which is a passing score but she needs more time to absorb material and is now reading on the side

I appreciate the Manteca/Stockton info...we go to the range in Linden...
But with the holidays and the study format I'm using, we will likely stick with taking the test in Benicia on Jan 13...

KM6xxx, Sonoma County.
Just got my tech, and veeerrrryyyyy slowly getting in to it. Not a world I have any knowledge about, but it's interesting to learn!
I haven't gotten around to figuring out how to program my radio to hit the repeaters yet, and just have a cheapo baefong until I learn the basics. Hopefully I'll find time over the next month or two to figure things out, and buy a decent radio.

Anyone partaking in this weekends ARRL VHF contest? I will be operating portable on a mountain top in the east bay. Starts at 11am tomorrow. If you're in the bay area or valley monitor 146.520, and give me your call sign and grid square. I am a W station.

Been licensed for over 40+ years here with an Advanced Class non Vanity 2X2 call. I originally tested at the FCC Field Office back in Detroit with a WD8*** prefix during the US Bicentennial as a 16 year old teenager, so I do know and use CW quite often.

Active mostly on HF operating CW, and some SSB using older American made gear some tube type and older solid state dear/ Drake, Collins, Heathkit, Ten Tec, Atlas, Swan, and I have only one Japanese HF rig an Alinco DX-70TH. Living on 80 acres of timber on a hilltop, I have many HF wire antennas usually fed with 450 ohm Twin Lead Ladder Line instead of coaxial cable.

I can usually be found on the weekend 40 Meter West Coast Swap Net on 7.240 MHz LSB (12:30 to 3 pm) listening for the deal of the day, or some exotic older piece of equipment to show up, since I can and do work on most of my own radios.

My HF AM station and rack mounted Collins receivers. Heathkit DX-100 transmitter at 100 watts of plate modulated AM, and rack mounted Mil Surplus VHF BC-639, R-388, and R-390 HF receivers.

I hardly ever operate VHF/ UHF FM thru repeaters unless on a road trip. I would rather operate VHF CW and SSB with my older Yaesu FT-221.

The HTs I have are several older Yaesu FT-727 dual banders and FT-109 220 MHz which use the same batteries, Yaesu FT-50R (2 of them), Radioshack HTX-200 and HTX-400 mini handhelds, and much older Icom 2AT and 3AT. I found them over the years on Ebay and at a very reasonable costs/ some for even less than the cost of a new Chinese HT.

Thanks - I am just carrying on the tradition of my long time "Elmer"/ mentor who is now a 'Silent-Key' - Shally K6VHP who ran a business "CLASSIC RADIO - Real Radios Glow In The Dark", and specialized in restoring older vacuum tube ham gear. That is besides his being the Chief Engineer at a local TV Station..

He had a mini museum with lots of the older tube type amateur radio equipment he had restored.

For the price of one of the brand new whiz bang do-it-all push button I-Ken-SU top dollar amateur radio HF rigs, I have a room full (and then some) of older vacuum tube and early solid state (have to turn the knobs) radios, and I have worked all over the world with them for over 42+ years now.
