I am not sure , but that seems to happen with some of the forums. I think its the server bandwidth or something. I am not a net wizard, so hopefully someone else has the answer why. But most people say just hitting the refresh button works.

Awesome thread! Has dramatically improved my photos!
Same camera was used to take these two pics: Last week, before I had read this thread: Today after building a light booth, playing with camera settings, and minimal Photoshopping:

Hey THT, that AR pic you took is simply awesome - very well done - great lighting, good focus (from what I can tell), very clean and good white balance. A HUGE improvement over your "before" picture. Nicely done. I am impressed!

Thanks! Believe it or not, it was taken with an IS 850 point 'n shoot! I have my fiancee's XTi sitting here but haven't gotten around to playing with it.

In one week, after reading this thread, my lower will turn into a rifle and I'll get a handgun to boot? Heck ya, I'm in for this deal! Thanks for posting, Turby. Seriously, though, Photoshop is mentioned often. But it is not a single product, there are a lot of different boxes on those shelves that all say Photoshop. What specifically should we be looking for to break into the world of Photoshop editing? .

Turb... this is such a great thread...
Is there any way for you to reconnect the links to the pictures in the first few posts or directly upload the photos to the thread so the links don't get lost in the future...??? |

Very interesting
Reading this thread and seeing nice FA pix. got me very interested to learn.
I currently have two Cameras that uses film: Nikon FE body with 24MM, 2.8, 50MM, 1.8 and zoom 200MM, 1.4 Nikon lenses and speed shutter. The other is a Nikon N75 with 28-80MM and 70-300MM lenses. So are these any good for taking great looking FA pix at close up? Thanks

Of the lenses you mention above, I would be tempted to use the 28-80mm for this type of photography. Maybe the 24mm would be ok; I wouldn't bother with the 70-300mm for sure. The only way to know is to give it a go.. The basic techniques will be the same, you just won't be able to do all the digital adjustments I've talked about for setting up the camera, but the basic theory is the same. Turby |

Negative, I meant Firearms for FA. But yeah, I should not use the terminology here in the US
@Turby Thanks, I will give it a try.

Turby, I just want to thank you this thread, it's been a great help with my pictures, but I decided that the point and shoot wasn't getting me where I wanted to go with my pictures, so I picked up a Canon Rebel DSLR, and I love it, I was used to taking pictures on my 35mm Nikon FM, but Digital is soooooo much more user friendly, so as soon as I get the hang of my new camera, and take a worthy picture I post it. Thanks to you I think this is going to fun not to mention better picture taking, I built the filtered light studio like you did , and it's working out great.
Best Regards tEN wOLVES

I have a dirty sensor and I need to change my bulbs to florescent
replace the *** with a certain 3 letter bad word that begins with a f. Pity google assigned me that random word, this is the cool one with a loaded cylinder!

Hi Dough, good effort, but yeah - clean the sensor, get more light, maybe bump up your EV. You don't need to change bulb types, you just need to set your white balance. Read my new tips at the beginning of this thread on how to set your white balance correctly. Good luck!

I picked up a black backdrop and a couple lights from my local photo supply a few years ago to take photos of cycling components I make. I've used it lately to take a few of the 1911 I am working on.
This was only with one light (the other is setup on my desk) and there's no box around anything so its a bit bias on the right side. I kind of like it that way though. I had the light laying on the ground facing up and slightly away from the setup. I also took the photo with my phone. I kind of like my photos dark. I need to set things up legit and build a box around it with some cloth to rid hotspots. I don't know all that much about taking photos though. |

Still playing around with the settings. Need to get a tripod too (been using a stack of books as support).
I was too lazy to make a box, so I took one of those rolling filing carts, flipped it upside down, and draped a bedsheet over that. One of these things:

Here's a couple of my old images... I'll shoot new ones in the near future
I used cheap a Tungsten continuous light setup. Set the white balance to "Tungsten" and fired away. I no longer use this setup but, being able to view the shadows it casted was convenient. Here's a setup shot: |

Did somebody say you cant use a flash??
Just a little light box I made out of a case of oil and some paper. I could have bumped the flash up a little. If you look close you can see the seam of the paper. It was hand held too. |

Overcast outside, no artificial lights.

Same gun, top of slide, 2 6500k 150 watt lights, bounced off side walls 2 75 watt lights ( not sure on the k value , they came with the little light box I bought off ebay ). Shinning upward.

On the contrary, that's excellent lighting. Shadow is what's making it pop. Reminds me of the metal factory in Terminator 2.
