get it now before it's too late
There is a great lesson to be learned here.
If you think the current supply and demand and pricing for AR parts is crazy, wait til we have a big earthquake and we can't get water. Not everyone is actually buying or wanting guns, but they will want water. I will be stocking up this week. |

The Sawyer Squeeze is supposedly good for a million gallons. Somehow I doubt it'd be durable enough to last that long, but it's an option.

Fredridge here are some companies that's in your area or somewhat close where you can get water containers or barrels:
http://www.majorsurplus.com/Water-Pu...age-C2172.aspx http://www.sosproducts.com/ http://local.honeyvillegrain.com/ran...ail-store.html I've dealt with all three and are good in pricing and customer service. Also check out Pepboys Automotive. They sell Scepter blue 5 gallon water containers. They cost around $12 a piece. They are the civilian version and the plastic walls are thicker than what Walmart sells, Aquatainer brands. Last edited by ireload; 12-23-2012 at 3:11 AM.. |

Heck if my dog can drink out of the toilet, so can I.
Really, Katadyn water filters are great.

Its that time of the year for me to restock and rotate and add things.
I now feel like in our current state, we pretty much need to hide a grocery store in the garage! At least the water part is the easiest. Space is the only thing killing me.

Definitely worth storing water. Some thing that I need to improve upon.

The filter is good for that many gallons, but presumably you'd go through quite a few of the water bags or your own water bottles. You can also rig the filter between a couple of 5-gallon buckets, using gravity to feed through the filter from one bucket sitting higher than the other.

At the very least, go down to your pool supply store and get some chlorine pool shock. Use it to make liquid chlorine and you can purify tens of thousands of gallons with one little $8 bag.
Google it for instructions. Too lazy today.

Also, water purification tabs are a moderately priced option until you can find something better or afford something more expensive. These straw thingies also seem like they're a good idea to have

You have 30-50 gallons at any given time in your hot water heater. Amazing how many folks do not know/or think about that.

Costco has the best deal. $91.25 for a 55 gallon barrel if you buy the bulk pack:
8 - 55 Gallon Water Containers Barrel is made from high-density polyethylene (food grade/ BPA Free). Barrel comes in blue color to restrict light, which helps to control the growth of bacteria and algae. Barrel weight when full is approximately 480 lbs. 8 - Water Pumps (45" long, 3² wide) Hose (47" long, 1" wide) 8 - Bung Wrench 8 - 55 Gallon Water Treatment Solution Detailed instructions http://www.costco.com/Shelf-Reliance....11701766.html I only need 4. Anyone willing to purchase this set with me? If so, PM me and we can work out the details. Last edited by ucbruins; 01-04-2013 at 9:46 PM.. |

+1 Those containers are awesome. I was looking at those vs the military containers. Bought one for the price and then subjected to dropping it, jumping on it, and beating the crap out of it both full and empty. Held up like a champ. They usually have limited stock, so I'll stop by and buy one when I see it. Have had 5 now for almost a year and have had no leaks. Very impressesed for the $$.

[QUOTE=bigtruck;9994385]I'm thinking of getting the large water bladders for storage[/QUOTE
I've been eyeing them a bit too, but the 55 gallon drums seem like they're much easier to store

I have been saying this to friends and family for a long time about ammo water etc and thought I was crazy. Alaska just had a huge earth quake yesterday like a 7.5 When we had our big one lots of people will be dried up and thirsty.

One caution on the sawyer water filters: you absolutely cannot let them freeze. I own one as well as a Katadyn pocket. The sawyer's work on the same principle as the filtrate material for dialysis machines...the filament tubules have a hugely large surface area for their size and filter based on this principle. But basically, when you get down to such a level of filtration, you become that much more susceptible to damage from tubule deformation...aka "freezing".
Therefore, if you even suspect that the temps may go below 32'F (or even with windchill), you better walk and sleep with your filter right next to your body. Once the filter freezes, sawyer themselves say the damage is "indeterminate". When it comes to something as critical as clean water, I don't like that word.
