Best food quality and service wise was the air force chow hall on Bragg/Pope around the corner from the-compound-which-shall-not-be-named, near the officer housing and one of the theaters IIRC. It's like an oldschool diner compared to all of the 82nd chow halls around.

As far as on DFAC's go the best I had was the one meal at Camp Lemonnier.
But the best meal hands down was on a merchant marine ship that was transporting us to Djibouti for a flight to afgan from the MEU I was on. Coming from being a LHD for four months with **** dining to being asked how I would like my steak cooked kind of throws you off. Also to anyone who is a cook in the Navy, how the **** do you burn rice? |

Best DFAC Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti Africa
May be the only solid construction building on the entire base, but its clean, efficient and the food is excellent Worst DFAC USS INDEPENDENCE 1990-1991 Just a few examples: Ever had chilli-mac with chunks of bone ground in the chilli? I chipped a tooth on that garbage, and they served it 4 days a week. As part of war-games exercise, we went to battle rations, where the food came out of a can/container, and the food IMPROVED! |

The one by Baghdad International Airport, hands down, no contest. Anything you could ever want to eat was out at the same time.
Made for a good final meal before flying out of country. We were closing down our base, so were on MREs about 30 days before we hit Baghdad. Stuffed our faces to full retard. I think my first plate was thru the regular line. My second run I had spaghetti, mozza sticks, jalapeno poppers, and some chicken strips to top it off. Then, follow that up with some cake, cookies and ice cream. At the same time. |

The Australian Army anything was amazing.
I participated in their version of Mojave Viper and had the pleasure of eating at both chow halls on permanent bases and in the field and they were both amazing. They dont have UGRs or GREs they literally have field kitchens were they cook amazing real food. Steak, Chicken, Salads, Pasta, Casseroles every night. On permanent bases they gave you as much as you wanted, had every condiment known to man, had a sandwhich bar that would put a jewish deli to shame and nothing was pre made or "instant" including the eggs. It explains why everyone in the Australian Army is built like a brick house. |

I second that. Loved that chowhall while I was there for my A and C schools at CSTSC.
I also really like the chowhall at Yokosuka Naval Base Japan. Of course any chowhall is better than one at a Marine Base. |

The Chief's mess Hall on the USS Ronald Regan. On Thanksgiving.
We didn't eat like that in the Army.

It was at Ft. Hood Tx, back in the early 90's. Can't remember the name of it, but it was over by III Corps and the main gate. I think it was attached to the support brigade.
Troops from all over post would come to eat there. Finally, you had to show proof that your were supposed to eat there, if you weren't in a unit they supported, you didn't get to eat. Luckily, my g/f was in one of the units they supported, so I got to eat there everyday! |

One in Heidelberg Germany, USAREUR HQ. Supported more brass than a marching band. The Green Zone DFAC in Baghdad was good too.

Al Asad on our way out in '06. Holy Crap! I had never seen so much real food and selections for one meal. Shark Base was good too. NSW knows how to grill.

Vandenberg's new facility is pretty great. It is more expensive than most too, part of the new movement to offer exceedingly palatable food on base. I was skeptical at first, but it is even better than Monterey and Balboa.

Camp Virginia Kuwait, Al Asad, TQ, FOB Ramadi, Leatherneck and KAF all had the best DFACs. It was SOP to stuff my cargo pockets with Rip Its or whatever other drinks they had.

1962, Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego, CA. I was there straight out of boot camp, in fact loaded into an ambulance out on the grinder right after final graduation ceremony. Spent three long months there with pneumonia, once stabilized they passed out daily menus and you made your three meal selections from quite a few different dishes which were served at our bedside. Their mess had won a string of fleet awards.

Rhein Main air base in Frankfurt, for the single night I spent there on my way to Berlin with the Army. Close second was the d-fac that opened up for the 5/502 bn (I was in 6/502) at McNair barracks. All civvy cooks with lots of options from the local economy instead of the typical 2 main dishes:
1. some kind of chicken 2. some other meat

Air Force Chow hall at Da Nang, Viet Nam 1969. Pretty special for a Marine. Unfortunately the word got out and too many Marines showed up.The Air Force Brass called the Marine Corp brass and that led to a directive suggesting Marines must eat in there own "Mess" Hall.

Silver Dolphin Bistro! It's one of the best rated facilities in the Military. They consistently win those Supply department awards across the fleet.

Hmmm - I can only speak to stateside, but the best for me was Channel Island Air NG base across the runway from Point Mugu (Ventura, California area).
Talk about selection and quality. Having eaten at a dozen bases for Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy - I think the USAF has the lock on the best chow facilities. |

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot??
There must have been copious amounts of alcohol involved for NorCal to make that statement.
I did 18 months at NAS Memphis during the Go-Go 80's, and that chow hall sucked....or it blew - which ever is worse. Loved the station and the townies though... |

I was there in 85, but only spent four months there. As a Marine I was stationed at different bases including Airforce and Army. The best chow I had was on the USS Bellowood.
