Novak sights for my Makarov
I'd like to get some Novak white-dot sights for my EG Makarov. I use it for CCW and my old eyes and it's small sights are not getting along very well. Any ideas who I could contact? I tried Novak and they said they could do it as a custom job for around $300. Seems a bit steep to me.

Have you tried www.makarov.com? I know they used to do gunsmithing services, don't know if they still do or not.

Makarov.com no longer does gunsmithing but thanks for the suggestion. As to dressing pigs. I fail to see why wanting to change the sights on my CCW is cause for insults. I carry the Makarov because I like it. I wasn't aware that I had to please anyone else.

If I might be more diplomatic... I think the idea is that there isn't a big aftermarket for eastern bloc surplus in strange calibers and there isn't a lot you can do short of taking sights from something else and getting your slide dove-tailed to fit.

Any competant gunsmith should be able to cut the Novak dovetails into the slide. I'd just call around to some smiths in your area and ask if they can do it.

Grim as it may seem, so far, smiths in my area seem to be virtually non existant. That's why I've been hoping for suggestions.

I'd ask over at the Makarov forum at http://www.gunboards.com/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=3
The Makarov's a great gun, if a bit heavy for CCW, but is reliable, accurate, and well-made. The sights are one of the few weaknesses, IMO. |

You can send the bare slide to anyone with machining tools along with your sights for proper fitment.
Expect to spend around $60 in machine time to cut the 2 dovetails, minimum. Don't let these cats get you down, Maks are THE BEST all steel back-up sized 380/9x18 pistol you can get and carry. I rely on mine and its 100% reliable. In over 4 yrs of shooting it and 5000+ rounds there is no appreciable wear and Ive never ever ever (EVER) had any failures to function with the pistol. This includes using JHP, FMJ and 4-5 different ammo makers. Surprisingly 9x18 Blazer from CCI is one of the hottest factory loads around, we were clocking over 1070fps from 95gr CCI aluminum cased rounds, with real consistent spreads in FPS variance (+/- 5fps or so) If you can wait for 3-4 weeks (maybe less) I can get the sights installed locally at our machine shop onto your slide and then sight the slide in for you so its ready to drop on and shoot. If interested lemme know and I could get a quote (I have a mak myself) Along with the Novak sights you should consider a 19# recoil spring and a set of Pearce grips. Those 3 upgrades will make the ultimate single stack DA defense pistol. I offer trigger jobs for Maks (you send me all the guts minus the frame and I do the work on my frame) Take it easy and good luck J |
