Small guns:
Glock 26/27 Airweight .357 Kahr Big guns: Any midsize/fullsize glocks SA XD SW M&P Small guns are ones I carry/would carry in the 100 degree summer heat. Big guns are for winter. I have kept my lists to less expensive guns. If you have a bigger budget, mid-high end 1911s and HK USP would enter the picture. |

Mine are my G23 because I'm most comfortable with it and it's really not that much bigger than the small Glocks.
My PT145 because it's a 10+1 .45 caliber. and my pocket gun is a 642 j-frame. Will always go bang and .38 +p is preferable to .380 in my book.

Thanks for the feedback.
I'm going with Glock 23 primary and then a revolver for secondary... small gun. I like a few that have been mentioned here... 1. S&W 642 or 638 airweight... can someone educate me on the J frame? I think the 2 modles I mentioned are J frame. Also the +p ability means that it is a newer model that can shoot a more powerful round... correct? 2. Ruger SP101 .357 Mag I am going to either buy one of the 3 revolvers mentioned or trade for a really nice mini-14 .223 that I have. Feedback is appreciated. Please continue to list 3 favorites! |

i can't believe there's only one Sig on this list. i absolutely love my Sig P220 carry SAO. don't carry yet, but hopefully soon (!) but because of what i have in my possession, my 3 would be:
1) sig P220 carry SAO two-tone 2) Para LDA carry 6+1 stainless 3) sig SP2009 would love to get a little j frame or a small bersa .380, but that's some point in the future. |

Unless you want to spend as much on clothes as you did on the gun....like I said before....snubby. Most of the other guns listed are for guys with office jobs and good posture. If that is you, it really doesn't matter what you carry. If you occasionally reach for the top shelf, get down on the floor to plug in something, etc. etc.......or work for a living building or repairing something, anything but pocket carry is going to be a problem. And, btw, two inch snubbies hide better than the popular Kahr PM9 because they have a curved signature, instead of one like a small brick. Gun and only gun, in a holster that will stay in the pocket, in the front right pocket. Speed strip and only speed strip in the back right pocket. I am better armed than 99.9 percent of the population, but more poorly armed than those who claim to be packing an arsenal.

S&W 3914NL - 8+1 9mm - "well travelled" Quote:
1. Traditional "Chiefs Special" with the exposed hammer (SA/DA) 2. Centennial models with a concealed hammer (DAO) 3. Bodyguard models with a shrouded hammer (SA/DA) The J-frames are actually in two different 'sizes' now. There is the traditional J-Frame used on the .38 Special revolvers like the 638, 442, etc. And there is the J-Magnum frame¹ used on the .357 chambered guns like the 340SC, 640 and 649 revolvers. (see photo below) The +P (extra pressure) designation is now standardized and means the cartridge produces up to about 10% more pressure than the standard load. For the .38 Special, this means a 20,000 psi pressure vs. 17,000 psi for the standard load. By comparison, the .357 magnum produces 35,000 psi. Four frame materials are availabe. Blued carbon steel (classics), stainless steel, aluminum alloy and Scandium/Aluminum alloy. The latter alloy allows S&W to build a lightweight .357 Magnum like the 360. These 12-15oz powerhouses are not much fun unless you have masochistic tendencies. S&W J-frame .38 Special Model 42 (top) vs. J-Magnum .357 Model 649 (bottom) The S&W 642 Centennial Airweight and the 638 Bodyguard Airweight are .38 +P rated revolvers that utilize an aluminum alloy frame with a steel barrel and cylinder. Typically people refer to these as "carry lots, shoot little" guns for several reasons. 1. Their lightweight means more felt recoil. 2. Heavier +P loads, over time, produce more wear & tear. 3. Earlier models (pre '85) tended to stretch the frame with hotter loads. These guns can be difficult to manage accurate rapid fire and be painful to shoot for some. Their primary advantage is lightweight. The steel framed 640 is the heavy (23oz) counterpart to the 642 Airweight. It can also be had in .357 Magnum and carried with .38 +P. The stainless counterpart for the 638 is the 23oz Model 649 in .357 Magnum (above), which is slightly larger overall. With boot grips that stop at the bottom of the frame, these gun can conceal nicely. The steel guns are not "pocket carry" guns due to their weight. In a winter coat they work okay, but not your docker slacks. Using an IWB I can hide my 649 under a loose fitting polo or t-shirt. The Ruger SP-101 is a stainless steel 5-shot .38/.357 from Ruger. It is slightly larger than the J-Frame and heavier (about 26oz) and sturdy. The one I have serves as a travelling companion for my hotel room at night and is locked in my car during the day. The 649 I'll wear instead of the Ruger. Advantage for the Ruger is lower price (generally). Rugers are also well know for their durabillty. Keep in mind that the hardest part of any gun to conceal is the grip. Double-stack magazines usually make it much more difficult to conceal a pistol under a light cover garment than a single stack. For a compact pistol, the S&W 457 is a small 7+1 shot .45 ACP similar to the 3914 above. It conceals and carries well plus packs the heavier punch of the .45. ¹ The J-Magnum differs from the J-Frame primarily in; a larger cylinder opening for the longer .357 cylinder, thicker topstrap, thicker frame opening for the .357 barrel and a little more steel at the recoil shield area. Kahr PM9 in a pocket holster is my daily carry. I prefer the thinner profile to a snubby revolver in my pocket. It pretty much looks like I have my wallet in my right front pocket if anyone even notices and I've never had anyone mention it or give it a second look.
I also have a Kahr P380 I'm working on breaking in for pants with smaller pockets, but its had a few teething issues so far.
