Default Rock Island Armory M5

These just went clearance price at big 5 which means I can pick it up for $176 with my employee discount plus tax and fees. (I knew keeping big 5 as a part time job was worth it) I'm thinking of getting one for my grandma's house since I live there 5 or 6 days a week for my full time job. I have a 870 police magnum at my parents house but this is a good price especially if it gets stolen I won't take that big a hit. Do you Cal gunners like yours? The only thing that bugs me a little is that the barrel is fixed to the receiver.

I bought one recently. I've had it out shooting a couple times. Solid gun, esp. for the money. I put a 8rd. mossburg 500 tube (same thread) on mine just to increase the capacity by a couple rounds.

That looks really nice. I bought one of those last year. Sold it and bought a Maverick 88. After seeing yours with that 8 shot tube I think I may buy another and keep it this time.

I originally looked at the KAK tube kit, but at $75 plus shipping for a $200 shotgun didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Plus it's black(blued). My RI M5 shotgun had a brushed nickel finish. A Nickeled Mossberg 500 tube is $37 plus shipping.

Bellts,

Can you confirm the following mag tube https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/1053600A is the same one you used to install on your m5?

Also, did you change out the m5 mag tube spring for a mossberg 500 extended tube spring, or did you keep the factory m5 tube spring and not had any shell feeding issues? Here is a link to the mossberg 500 extended tube spring https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/1053600A

Thanks for your help! I was going to go with KAK industry extended mag tube but when i found this post of your mod, i like the mossberg extended mag tube a whole lot more (not to mention the major price difference), because my m5 is also nickel plated like yours and would much more prefer to have the shotgun all nickel plate finish.

Also sending you a PM in case you may not see this post.

I get PMs for this mod from time to time - about 1 a month...

Here's the parts list:

Mossberg 500 Mag Tube - Nickel:
http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/1053600A.htm
Extra Nickel Mag Band & Screw:
http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/1446060B.htm
http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/912220B.htm

You do not need to purchase a separate-longer spring. The spring that comes with the gun will work just fine. No feeding issues.

Bought one last year. Rough but solid. Bought to have a 12 gauge I could leave out of the safe.

Also the slimiest gun I every bought. Was dripping with oil.

Isn't it made in PI? Isn't that a no no unless there's more US parts? Or is that just semi's?

922r doesn't affect shotguns or handguns, I believe.

It does affect shotguns, but apparently only semi's.

i bought one years ago and literally it was junk. the bead sight was drilled at a really bad crooked angle on the front of barrel. it wouldn't load the shells into the chamber more then 60% of the time...
I contacted RIA said to send it back, but I ended up just giving it to my buddy for free, I didn't want to deal with that Junk!
on the other hand I've owned RIA handguns and loved them!

I have an Armscor M30SAS which is basically the same thing, except it's black and already comes with the extended mag tube.

Its great for it's price point, much like just about anything that RIA/Armscor makes.

No issues in over a year now with various loads. I absolutely trust it and serves as a defense firearm in my business place.

These are both of mine. A Parkerized and an Electroless Nickel model M-5. Both ran beautifully right from the box with everything I fed them. From 1 ounce 2-3/4" Trap loads, to the heaviest 3" Magnum slug and buckshot loads. The only issue I've had with both of them, is the heat shield moving forward under recoil. (About an 1/8th of an inch in 100 rounds).

I moved it back after I finished cleaning the weapon, but this appears to be a rather common problem with these guns. With many owners stripping out the threads fastening it to the gun. I'm still searching for a proper, permanent fix. Perhaps a small roll pin installed through the heat shield ring, at the end of the magazine tube where it won't interfere with the ammunition inside it. We'll see.

I'm not a big fan of heat shields on shotguns. They're unnecessary, and just provide sharp edges on the weapon to catch things on, or cut yourself. But that's the way Rock Island ships these guns, so you don't have much of a choice when you purchase one. One other plus I found with this gun for the price, is that it's all steel, including the trigger group. With no Aluminum or plastic anywhere, other than the stock.

Reviving this thread to add a part to the mag tube upgrade. The Mossberg tube fit and functions perfectly. The open threaded hole in the end bothered me. Found a 99 cent solution. Automotive panel fastener from hardware store. Used the smaller one because I thought it looked better.

In case you scratch up the forend nut (like I just did) here's the link to that: http://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/1446050B.htm

What did you use to get the forend sleeve nut off?

Does anyone know the pitch of the thread for the magazine band screw? I know it's the same for both it and the recoil shield. I'd like to get a Button Head Torx or Allen Head. Especially for the recoil shield. I can't get enough torque on the slotted head screw, and the recoil shield keeps moving forward. I have 2 of these. One in Nickel and one Parkerized. And both have the same problem. (See above post).

Is the heat shield easily removable? How’s the finish hold up? Think it’s actually up to a marine environment? I need a new boat gun.

Just take out the two screws that secure the magazine band and the heat shield and you can slip it right off. I'm not sure how the finish will hold up as a boat gun. The site says the parkerized finish will "take a beating while functioning in the harshest environments" if that means anything to you.
