Default M1 Carbine help

Hello,

A coworker is trying to sell me his M1 Carbine. All I know is that it is a Saginaw but I have not seen it in person. He sent me some pictures today. What do you guys think it's worth? Should I pass? TIA

I’m no expert, but better pictures and knowing the asking price would certainly help. At the very least, the receiver is USGI and the barrel markings indicate that it probably has the original barrel.

M1 carbines take a hit on value if they are import marked. I am not 100% certain, but the serial number stamped into the stock probably happened somewhere outside the U.S. Denmark IIRC

It looks like someone took a hammer and file to the end of the receiver. May be some numbers scratched in the mess as well.

Under magnification the rear sight appears to have been stored in a Wookies posing pouch.

Stock looks refinished. How much are they asking?

Just my opinions - worth what you paid for them

1. WTH is going on with the rear of the receiver? As another mentioned, looks like it was filed/stamped and numbers were engraved.
2. The first pic shows a very shiny stock. Appears it might have been laminated?
3. I have not known an original USGI stock to have a serial # that matches the receiver. This appears to be a later addition.

Saginaw is a collectible maker, but the gun will never be collectible due to the damage to the rear of the receiver. If you are looking for a shooter, might be a fun gun and price it accordingly. Before offering him anything, I would ask what he wants. If he's looking for $600 or $700, snatch it up. If he wants $1,200, walk away.

Taking a WAG on this one without better pictures I think the point of pain would be $900 - $1000. Not collectable at this point but just about any M1 carbine now days is getting harder to find at the sub $1000 price.

I’ll say it is worth buying if in the $600 range +/- and is completely functional. To this day, the M1 carbine is one of the most functional and quick handling carbines out there, and a formidable defensive weapon as well.

I’d also tell the seller to try a little harder on the description and photos if he expects someone to hand over a pile of cash for it.

Thanks guys, I'm going to pass on this one. My search for a M1 Carbine continues.

Probably your best bet. The refinished stock doesn't bother me much because that is an easy fix. The damage to the rear receiver would be tough to swallow though, were I looking for a nice "representative" carbine.

I'd pay in the 600s for it right now as a shooter, so I didn't have to shoot my other real nice original ones!

Looks like it has seen foreign service and an identifier stamped on the receiver was defaced before it was released. Maybe it came through the CMP.

A while back, some carbines came in from Israel. Those all had the serial numbers stamped on the stock. I remember picking one up from Big 5 years ago.

I'd pay $500 if its fully functional. Even though the rear of the receiver looks like it had some other inventory number grinded off.

The stock has a matching serial number but who knows if it is original.
