I'm an idiot
Moved to Cali. recently and the other day I went to the DMV to get my CA license. Today, hopped a bus across the bridge to go shoot at a range in San Rafael. Been there once before and it was fine. But today, they wouldn't let me shoot.
Apparently, the temp ID the DMV gave me isn't a "legal form of ID." And they wouldn't accept my now void out-of-state ID because it had a little hole punched in it at the DMV. So I wasted two hours bussing out there and two hours back. Awesome. |

You need an ID to go ranges now? The last time I went to one all they wanted was cash.

Thats a bummer, I remember (not related to shooting) when I got my commercial license and had a temp for a couple weeks. It sucked for any purchase that required valid ID, because I didn't have one!

I once had a bouncer take away my real ID, when I was the DD.

carrying a gun to the range
Never thought of this until I read this post. Is it legal in california to carry a gun in a backpack on the way to the range on a bus? Is there a legal way to do this on public transportation?

Unloaded in a locked case but like you indicated the public transportation aspect might be a trickbag though. Look through PC 12027.

I just carry unloaded, in a LOCKED pelican case. It's perfectly legal. How else are you supposed to get to the range if you don't have a car? You can't just put a gun in a backpack, though. It must be unloaded. And LOCKED in a container. You can do this on any public transportation as long as they don't have an individual policy against it. Bart = ok, Muni = ok, Subway = ok. Buses = ok, Taxi = ok, on a bike = ok, on pogo sticks = ok.
