Training Question - Coming from out of state
Hello,
I'm coming from WA state into California to take a vehicles tactics course. In regards to mag limitations and what not, do i need to do anything prior to attending the course from a legal perspective such as notifying local LEO office, etc... Thanks! |

CA has a 10 mag limit and no threaded barrels or silencers. Other than that no legal issues that I can see.
It will be a few years before CA requires a permit and a LEO notification to train with firearms.

There is an injunction which currently prohibits enforcement of California's ban on the possession of large-capacity magazines, but the importation of such magazines remains a felony and is unaffected by the injunction.

Technically, there is an exemption for competitions (maybe training as well, but I'm not sure) for residents from other states to bring AWs directly into and out of the state for that purpose .
It probably won't keep you out of jail, but might prevent you from being charged. |

Penal Code section 30665 does provide the "Competition" exemption that you described. However, one condition is that the competition must be sanctioned by a law enforcement agency, or by a federal or state "recognized entity." Just having an organized match doesn't qualify. There is no source of a "Training" exemption.

Any competition can be registered with the NRA (as an official tournament) to encourage out of state resident participation by completing the form here (https://tournaments.nra.org), and waiting for approval. It should be noted that this exemption does not apply to magazines. |
