You forgot the BEST anti-virus program. Microsoft's Security Essentials is taking top spot for most IT departments-not only because it is free, but it is actually a superior product.

If you use windows, there is one program that distinguishes itself in helping diagnose slow or virus infected computers. That Program is Autoruns which is free from Microsoft since they bought out Sysinternals.

It does have licensing restrictions though and for now is free only for home use or small businesses with 10 or less computers.

Isn't K-lite questionable as far as licensing goes? I it's free but isn't there some proprietary stuff in there that your are Supposed to pay for? Just asking.

Speaking from the perspective of someone who is in IT for a living, Wherryj is right. We actually dumped Trend Micro's OfficeScan client/server setup in favor of Security Essentials at my office. No more lame "subscriptions", annual fees, support contracts, or maintenance overhead for the win.

Great thread, Monkey,

I would add that OpenOffice.org has been forked due to concerns about Oracle owning the copyrights.

That fork is called LibreOffice, created by the vast majority of the original OpenOffice.org team. Just about all the GNU/Linux distros have adopted LibreOffice now, and it's more feature-filled.

http://www.libreoffice.org/

As with the original OpenOffice.org, it is available for GNU/Linux, Mac OS, and MS Windows. There is also a "portable" version for those running MS Windows, that runs directly from a USB thumb drive.

http://www.osalt.com/ is an open source alternative. If you type in adobe "something" they will show you an open source alternative to that program. Found some cool apps here but some are just like any open source software sometimes buggy and no support.

A great site to get a many free and useful apps is www.ninite.com.

You go to the site, you check off the applications you want installed, and it generates a small installer executable. You run the executable and it installs all the applications you checked off without you having to lift a finger.

No more downloading each and every app separately and then having to install each and every one.

They try and keep up with the latest versions, but occasionally you'll run into an application that isn't quite the latest.

Still for what it does, I think it's a great site.

I second ninite.com, I use them all the time for new installs. Another good resource is pcdecrapifier.com. If you buy your computers instead of build them, there's usually a lot of pre-installed garbage on there. This program lets you tick off what you want removed and it will pull it all off. Especially useful to get rid of all the trial software you find on laptops.

Uniextract

A lot of apps & programs are zipped in an installer package.
I hate when they embed other crap in them....like the google tool bar & stuff.

I always unzip/de-compress the executable.exe so I can see what its comprised
of. Many times 7-zip is not strong enough to break it open so I found a titan
of an extractor Uniextract .

It can open most any installer executable so you can peruse the files inside
it for malware before blindly clicking on Install.

Many times I find that I don't need to use the installer.exe , as the file can operate as a stand alone.
This is all the stuff inside the little Java icon download & 7zip couldn't open it,

Fastone screen capture 3.5 was last free one
Can even capture inside. Scrolling window. Brilliant.

Security essentials really?
I use forefront at work only because of the sa agreement. It missed so many simple infections. Forefront endpoint seems better. I actually preferred trend micro better heuristics.

I have a slightly different way of doing things, won't be the best for the impatient or technically challenged.

I do all web surfing via a virtual machine in my case I use VMware but there is a free version called Virtualbox. (it's good too)

The benefit is any infection/malware hits the VM not the host, you can shut off sharing between the VM and the host so there's less danger of infection to the host and the number of vectors/malware out there that include the ability to hop from a VM to the host target corporations specifically.

Haven't had an issue (on the host) in years, the VM can be dragged to trash and recreated or your can make a copy of a finished VM and drag the clean version out after getting rid of the old infected VM.

Think of it as an Internet condom.

It takes patience to set up, once you've figured out your flow it's easy, I do my banking from the host only and those are the only pages the host EVER hits.
Everything else is through the VM.

My VM is Linux (Ubuntu) I own no anti virus, malware cleaners, or any other 3rd party "security software" because I simply don't need it.

Knoppix CD and DVD distros run a pretty good Live Linux GUI that you can copy files from an infected partition to a networked computer before reinstalling an OS without pulling the machine apart. This has quick-saved some people's bacon a few times, and so have Slax distros. Both Knoppix and Slax read and write NTFS volumes if partitions are MBR.

For hitting other computers shares use this from Konqueror browser:
smb://<ip>/<sharename>
enter user/pass

AVG started hijacking browser search engines, on IE, Chrome, and Firefox.
