Does not make sense. Being able to build as you see fit will not change. Its cheaper for me to buy guns off the "streets" than to build or buy through an FFL. If they are going to make us criminals anyway, might as well do it, its more cost effective.
Did not think of this, great point. Gives some hope

I may have missed it but that article didn't actually say what the receiver on his rifle was.

It will be interesting to see where they go with this. It will certainly not be good for the Rights of Californians.

Because he didn't legally have to pass a background check to get it, that's the rub.

According to them:

Quote:
Zawahri's rifle appeared to be modified so it could fire more rounds, the sources said.
Quote:
California outlaws the commerce of AR-15 weapons that have certain features, including a detachable magazine, which allows sustained firing. Other features include folding telescopic or detachable stocks or a threaded barrel.

Purchase, sale and transfer of high-capacity magazines is illegal, but currently possession of the items is not.

Experts say that buying a legal, already assembled AR-15, and then taking it apart and rebuilding it to custom specifications is common.

The concern, said Garen Wintemute, director of the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program, is that some people buy an unfinished AR-15 base receiver and then build out the weapon without ever registering it.

"People who really push the envelope on the law like to play with the question, 'How finished does that lower receiver have to be to be considered a firearm?' " he said. "There's a point at which it is just a block of steel."

Anti-gun advocates have been raising alarms about illegal weapons that were put together with legally obtainable parts.

How convenient.

Quote "shooter used the second amendment loophole" heard that out of an anti today.

They won't ban 80% they will ban creating your own firearms and ban possession of underutilized receivers.

it's irrelevant if you ask me...not having a registered rifle, be it homemade, stolen, borrowed, whatever....that has no bearing on what he did...plus, it didn't hinder the police in any fashion when it came to identifying him

the accountability lies within the shooter, nothing else

show me ONE instance of a law stopping a criminal from obtaining a firearm and I'll endorse it...until then, it's all horsesh**

It's bad enough that county sheriffs in this state are given the power to infringe, at their whim, on our constitutional right to bear arms, but criminals effectively having that power really boggles the mind. It seems that aside from stealing and wasting our money, all the California government is really good for is creating criminals (through senseless gun control laws) and victims (deprived of our rights and our means of defense against violent criminals). This is truly the mark of a sick, twisted society that is on a downward spiral. That the people, on the whole, would allow or even support this indicates how pathetically stupid and weak we are.

What's with the blue mags in the photo ? That upper looks kinda cool. Looks like it has carbine length triangular hand guards.

If true (i.e. 80 % lower, hi-cap mags from parts kits, tac vest etc. etc) this guy has Calguns written all over him. Have we done a check to see if he was a member?

LA Times now reporting that the shooter was denied the purchase of a firearm in 2011. Maybe that's why he had to go the 80% route.

So the system worked and he was denied a gun in 2011. I'm actually surprised this didn't get more national attention and could have been much worse.

The politicians will get around the whole 80% issue by requiring YOU to register your AR by July 2015 (SB47). After that, if you haven't registered your gun then you commit a felony. No need to create a new law regarding 80% builds if you require every gun to be registered.
