Lord of the Flies at Sea
This is a good case study on how fast it happens.
Cruise crisis was a 'tale of two ships' http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,5259087.story

I use FireFox and don't have a subscription.
The gist of the article was about the Carnival Triumph and how some started hoarding food etc. This happened quickly and one should be aware of how fast it will happen if a large Earthquake or other natural disaster happens.

I saw a couple of TV interviews that almost went nasty about how people were cleaning out boxes of cereal from displays and taking everything they could get their hands on. There was a racial overtone to it - meaning the person talking was saying "they" were taking everything. Did "they" have a large group? Maybe. It would seem to me if I had a big group I'd want to all be there.

The interesting thing here is that given the size of the ship and how isolated they were from the outside world, this happened much more quickly than it would have elsewhere but demonstrates how things can go bad. But the other thing is that you also see how good people can be. I wonder where the tipping point is where the good people eventually become bad to save themselves.
