Default How do you store ammo?

Hi guys,

Now that I have 700 rounds of .45 ACP, was wondering what's a good way to store them. My range bag will be a little bit to heavy to hold them all. Is it ok to just leave the ammo in their boxes stored in my closet? Does those dry ammo boxes really work? I have one of those military ammo cans, can I just empty all the ammo into it, or will the constant movement ruin the ammo?

Thanks,
Emil

I use the Dillon 100 round blue plastic boxes. However it seems like they are always going empty.

I keep them in their original boxes placed into a military ammo can with some silica gel packs.

Do you have any .45 ammo in those boxes? If so, what size ammo can and how many boxes do they hold? Where do you buy the silica packs from?

.50 cal ammo can 2nd from the right, the 5 black boxes are 50rd Blazer brass. Blazer brass boxes are kind of bulky I can fit about 10 in the .50 cal. If you use speer lawman boxes you can get 14 in the .50 either one will fit 7 in a .30 can. The .50 cal size will fit 1000rds if they are in the original military cardboard 50rd caddyless cartons. Loose I would say 1000+ rds of .45 in a .50 cal can and they will be fine if you don't shake them up a lot. I think Miwall sells their reloads loose in ammo cans.

I get the silica packs from HP laptop bags when I take them out of the plastic bags at work. You can find them in a lot of backpacks, shoes, and electronic item packages. I've heard you can also use plain dry white rice in a small cloth bag or small container with holes in it in place of the silica gel.

I just drop my reloads loose into military ammo cans. Holds much more that way.

I do box match ammo in plastic cases for when I go to the range for practice and matches but bulk storage in the basement is always loose in air and water tight ammo cans.

All ammo cans and boxed ammo is then kept in lockable metal storage cabinets just for security reasons.

You cannot own too many surplus ammo cans

It's just easier to buy the media bulk and put it in small containers. Silica can be dried back out and re-used if heated to the correct temperature.

Pretty simple really...

Then there's another stash on the floor of the closet -- 1K+ of Greek M2 ball (.30 - 06) in sealed tins, another 1K+ of .45ACP reloads in blue boxes, another 1K+ of .223 match reloads in blue boxes, and a little less than 1K of Golden Tiger 7.62x39. Plus all my powder and primers. Not good if there's ever a fire...

I'd rather keep it all out in the garage, but in the summer it gets too hot out there, which is not good for the ammo.
