Default Safe to shoot 22 mag at 3/8 inch AR500 steel?

I have some steel targets that I shoot with 9mm. I'm considering purchasing a 22 magnum rifle, the CZ 512 with 20 inch barrel. My targets are 3/8 inch thick and made of AR500 steel. Would it be safe to shoot these targets with 22 magnum, say CCI Maxi-Mags or other powerful 22 magnum ammo? Would it dent the steel at 20-30 yards? Would I get more ricochets from 22 magnum than I do from 9mm? Is this too close for shooting steel with a 22 magnum rifle? Thanks for any info!

If the steel is set up and angled properly so that it is safe for handguns, it'll be just fine for 22mag.

Ive hit ar 500 steel at 30 yards with 223 and no damage to it.I do hang mine on a stand with a couple small chains so it swings too.If you dent it you got some cheap steel.

Ar-500 can take a lot of abuse... it’s velocity that kills steel plates

So pistols you want to be out of ricochet range
Rifles- 5.56/ 308 slow down enough so they don’t damage steel around 100 yards

What is the velocity of the .22 mag at your desired range?
The bullet profile / jacket of a 5.56 or .308 is tough

.22 mag is designed to break up in rabbits.

I’d shoot it once and see what happens.

I've got ar500 steel I've shot with a .357 mag with a 125gr bullet going 1700 FPS. I've shot the steel as close as 10 yards with no issues to the steel or being injured. Do it at your own risk!

I get my steel from shooting7tagets.com and use the 3/16" for 22 mag rifle with zero issues, but I also don't shoot from less than 50 yards either. You are more than fine with the 3/8".
