I bought the Wolf 8mm ammo that AIM had... I believe that it was $3.29 a box of 20 at the time I ordered my K-98 2 weeks ago.

Looks good Finwe!

Nice guns Fin and DA. Maybe we could start a swapping thread, everyone list serial numbers on parts and see if we can match any? Slim odds, but who knows?

I would definitely be down for that. Like you said, it's probably unlikely, but where's the harm?

OK so I got my K98's but I want to make sure that I log them correctly into the bound book.

Here is what I think I should enter... can anyone let me know if any of this is wrong?

Manufacturer and/or Importer (AIM)
Model (K98)
Serial Number (# from receiver)
Type (Rifle bolt action)
Caliber or Gauge (8mm Mauser)
Date (date I received)
From who received (AIM Surplus etc.)

Are you sure that the importer is AIM? Everything I ever got from them was imported by either Century or Tennessee Guns.

It might be stamped on the end of the barrel. There should be an importer's mark, the country the rifle came from, and the caliber. It will be abreviated.

Also, even though the bound book record asks for "Manufacturer or Importer", the actual text of the law in 478.125(f) says you need to record the manufacturer and importer. For K98's you can get the manufacturer from the code stamped on the receiver. But ATF can't expect everybody to know all of these decades-old foreign manufacturers' codes for every type of firearm, so I imagine something like "German military" could also work.

I wrote down "G.I.A. Knoxville TN" in the Manufacturer/Importer field.

If you need to identify the manufacturer code of your K98 for your bound book, you can look it up at :

So one of mine (the 1937) is in pretty good shape, easily holds the black at 100yds.

The other one is in pretty bad shape, I spent hours trying to clean the barrel and it is as black as a chimney flue. Kinda bummed since that is the one produced in 1941.

If all else fail, try electric bore cleaning... Parts and components cost about $15 and takes about an hour to put together. The actual treatment takes another hour.
It works for many of my hard-to-clean (formerly) dark bores.

See here for how-to:
http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews/copperout/index.asp

Be sure to have on proper personal protection equipment.

That electric bore cleaning is awesome!

I cannot believe how well it works!

It is amazing how good the bore looks now!
