The "CCW supporting document checklist" is asking for a copy of birth certificate and or naturalization papers.

Anyone know if a U.S. passport is good enough for this requirement?

If it turns out OCSD has a sincere motive to process people....which remains to be seen. Be ready, all you guys getting appointments may have a a good chance at getting a phone call for earlier appointments. Thats what happen to me last year in San Bernardino county. They geared up with new investigators and staff to handle a avalanche of calls.

Crap!
Just got an Email from Melissa 45 minutes ago. Sept 22nd was my date.
And I'll be in Austin that entire week. I wonder how soon they will fill out the remaining left on the 2014 calendar.

I sent my email request for an appointment on Sunday Feb 23 and did not receive any response today. Nobody answered the phones at the two CCW phone numbers given and both mailboxes were full.

Anyone get any CCW Appointments today?

Well that certainly sucks. There doesn't seem to be any order in here appointments are set up. I emailed over the weekend and didn't get a reply yet. You go yours almost right away. Others that emailed on Friday have dates in September. It's all whacky.

I must say I am rather impressed with the courtesy and professionalism being displayed by Melissa Soto & the OCSD, especially since we all know how overwhelmed they are right now with CCW interview requests. I can think of many dealings with other government agencies where they act like you are a burden whereas the OCSD is treating callers like customers. Kudos! I hope they get those poor ladies some extra help, pronto.

Emailed over the weekend, called a half dozen times today, and left my name and number with the receptionist. Haven't heard anything yet...frustrating.

People are getting appointments for 7 months into the future?!? That's as bad as not giving out a CCW at all! Seriously, that's some BS.

IMPORTANT dialing info! I think some of you are hanging up when you get the message that the voicemail is full. DON'T HANG UP or you may never get through. Their voicemail system will bounce you between a couple voicemail boxes that are always full. Despite the message that the boxes are full, they do at times pick up the phone during the transfers between voicemail boxes. I got 4 appointments on Friday (for me, wife, kids, dog, etc.) and averaged about 50 to 75 calls to get through each time. I only hung up after the last message that said there was no number associated to the attendant and the call could not be finished.

Yes, a valid (has not expired) US Passport is acceptable. It's what I provided for them.

Don't hang up until the voice says "Goodbye" and then disconnects you.

Also, I emailed Melissa Friday morning and got a reply at 1600 this afternoon with an appointment time of 0900 on 18 September.

looks like the sheriff might flip-flop on it, just checked ocsd.org and read this:

"If the Peruta v. County of San Diego panel decision is withdrawn by a decision to rehear the case en banc in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, or a stay is issued by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals or the United States Supreme Court, we may require applicants to supplement the “good cause” statement for the CCW License in accord with Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Policy 218. "

There is a new email address for permits- Email CCWPermits@ocsd.org instead of emailing Melissa directly.

I have to say, I just called and finally got through, and Melissa pulled a good one on me.
Melissa-"Hello?"
Me-"Yeah hi, wow I can't believe I got through!"
Melissa- "You've reached Melissa Soto's Voicemail system"
Laughter ensued. Holy cow, what a nice gal. Kudo's to her for putting up with this fiasco!

She also noted that there was "an extra person helping set up the schedules", so it sounds like OCSD is throwing a little extra manpower at it.

Sept. 11th is my date. I think someone may have cancelled their appt and I got their slot, because I noticed some people above me have later appointments.

It actually read this, (same way), since their rules officially changed.

Nothing new.

I just got an email response from Melissa. I emailed her on Friday @ 5pm, and got an interview date of Sept 23. Be patient, she's still going down the list.

Business and banking docs are only required if you are using "Carrying a lot of money for my business" as your good cause statement.

Anyone who uses anything other than "Lawful Self-Defense" at this time is simply adding ammunition for possible denial.

i asked about this when I was on the phone with her.

you do not need bank docs, or letter from business if you state for lawful self defense.

Just checking because I saw the number had at one point been disconnected. Are the numbers for the ccw offices listed on the site still the right ones?

Numbers should be the same, but better to email. OCSD has a new email addy for CCWs:

CCWpermits@ocsd.org

Just went ahead and emailed as the phone message instructed me to. I left my name, address, and phone number. Will they need anything else?

I also made a short note at the end thanking her for her time and expressing my appreciation for the service she's providing. I think it can't hurt for any of us emailing in to do something similar--maybe we can brighten her day a bit. It's not her fault that the draconian policies of the sheriff have created a bursting-well effect on the interest in applications.

That's all they need. Just your name and phone number, actually. They'll get back to you with a date. You then take the completed app with required docs in at that time.

Call me an idiot but we should all send Melissa "thank you" cards in the mail. It is not her fault the system is backed up. Think your frustrated with the wait I am sure she had no clue that this would happen and is swamped with emails and calls. It only takes a few frustrated idiots to make this look real bad for people wanting CCW's.

I think thanking her in the appointment request and sending a thank you response upon receiving your appointment will be enough. She can be overwhelmed with thank yous as well.

Default Live fire qualification bar for OC

Does anybody know the bar for qualifying in OC? How many rounds, what do you have to hit, range, etc.?

For the record, I plan to carry an XD service (I'm big enough that this will work) and am thinking about a derringer for back up. For no other reason than because derringer. I don't expect it to be good back up. I expect it to be cool.
