Default Ventura County Update

Interview today is pretty much a verification. On the bright side, they are pushing the CCW apps much quicker than before. The deputy said that last year, they were 12-15 months to an interview. Now, they are down to 5-6 months as my app was turned in 6/2010.

I was told that I should get a letter in about a month, and I should start looking into getting the training.

So, who is recommended in Ventura/LA County for the CCW training. I have a list, but would like some personal feedback. I do have some basic weapons/safety knowledge and would prefer a training in which I might actually get some new skills, instead of a dummied down course for newbies.

+ 1 for Tacfire. Great training and a real plus is you get to go to practices twice a month to re-enforce what you have learned.

Default Ventura ccw progress

Had my interview today.
I submitted in July.
Courteous interviewer, former Marine, asked a lot of questions about my reason.
Re-asked all the questions on the application. Took plenty of notes.
Said I will be notified in a Month.
Then fingerprint, then class.

Less than two weeks, got the approval letter. Signed up with TacFire which will begin tomorrow.

Fingerprints next week. I hope to have the cert by mid-January.

WAy to go.
I am thinking tac fire also if I get my approval.
They told me in a month after my interview on Dec 3.

Got no indication from the interviewer on my chances.

Where are they holding those now? Along time ago it used to be at the Ventura range, but I've heard that is closed now. Did Santa Paula ever build a range?

How does the registering of CCW handguns work?

There are 3 lines, is that the limit.

How easy/hard is it to change or add a handgun?

Do you need to "qualify" with each one listed? If so, is it really necessary to qualify with (for example) a XD40-fulsized and also a XD40 subcompact. Same gun, but different barrel lengths.

Also, I plan on getting another handgun that I would like on the permit. However, I won't have it DROS'ed in time for the 1/9 training date. I am purchasing it from a friend that would let me borrow it if needed. Could I qualify with it, even though I do not yet own it?

Thanks

Will they know you don't own it?

Well, finished up my training the other day, and I am patiently waiting for the background check to be complete. Any day now.

However, a question. I was expecting to get a "list" of the do's and don'ts of carrying a CCW. I guess the test given is the closest that it gets in Ventura County. I have searched the internet and apparently this "list" doesn't exist.

The test did go over government building, courthouses, and a few other no-no's. But when pulled over by LEO, it is only "advised" to notify them you have a CCW permit. I guess it is not mandatory as a condition of the permit like other counties. Also, there was no mention of carrying on school grounds.

I know the point of a CCW is that no one should know you have it, but I was surprised to find there wasn't more restrictions about carrying. Did I miss something?

No, not at all.

CA Penal Code principally notes exceptions to a number of things that allow CCW holders to do things others may not. Otherwise, what is on your license as limitations is what you must observe.

Sorry, it is hard to imagine something in CA that is without "conditions" attached.

Answers to a couple of your questions. No there is no magic book. You are ok to carry on school grounds. You can add as many as you want, if they run out of room on the three lines, there is room under your signature for at least three more. Ask me how I know.

Yes you must qualify on each weapon. So, you pay the instructor and then you pay the county $10. The drag with adding them usually the instructor will let you qualify for more than one weapon if you do it at the same time, but will charge you the full pop to do it later. Also, with the county, cash or check only, ask me how I know that as well ;-). FWIW, Ventura is a fairly easy county, with few additional restrictions imposed by the Sheriff.

Congrats!

Since its public record, would you be willing to share your good cause statement with us? I understand if the answer is no.

I don't quite think it is yet public record.

Also, I don't think that my reason would apply to many others. Let's just say that I am in the medical profession and I deal with "crazies".

Hello all. I am new to this forum and the CCW process. I turned in my completed CCW packet on 01/05/2011 and will keep everyone updated on the time frame.

I also am new to the forum. I have my packet on the way and am currently enrolled in Tacfire defensive handgun safety training. I will stay in touch.

ps Feel free to PM. I am nervous about appropriate good cause, even after searching.
