Remington 700 sps vs ruger american rifle
So I am debating which to get, either one will be in .308. I have owned an R700 (300 win) and know they are *****in rifles. I have not handled the ruger American but have heard nothing but great things and due to the lower price I can afford a better optic.
Anyone with experience with both want to chime in and enlighten me? Sent from my LG-LW770 using Tapatalk

I have a Ruger American in. 308. It's bad *** even though it is light. I got a combo with a decent scope from Sports Authority. At the SSZS I hit the 420 yard steel with it. One thing I suggest is, because the stock is lighter weight than the R700, attach a bipod. I still need to do that.

The benefits of a Remington 700 with seemingly unlimited aftermarket support are well documented. Depending on what you want do with the gun, that may or may not be a tipping point.
On the other hand, a lot of people say that the gun priced at a point that allows you to get a better optic is the one to go with, but that is all relative of course. So what do you want to do with the gun, and what is your budget for a rifle and scope package (base, rings, scope)? |

I purchased a Remington 700 AAC-SD in .308 because I wanted to learn how to shoot a centerfire rifle well. I recently sold it because it was too good a gun (sounds stupid right? ) . I put 2 rounds to get a rough zero. 3 more to confirm the zero. And then took 5 shots to see what kind of group I'd get. 5 shots were all touching at 100 yards. This was done with $10 2 piece leupold base, Warne tactical rings, and a Bushnell Elite 8-32. Oh and sand bags. I sold it right after that, since there really isn't anything to be gained unless I traveled an hour or more to a long distance shooting range. And shooting it at a 100 yard range was akin to shooting my Marlin 795 at a 50 yard range...the results are always the same, I know all the shots will go into the bullseye. The Ruger American was my other choice when I went centerfire rifle hunting. Handled well, trigger is what you'd expect from an off the shelf rifle. I wouldn't shoot it for a full day though, since it weighed significantly less than the Remington 700. I feel that it's more of a plinker/hunting gun. |

You get what you pay for is the best way to describe it.
Watch Nutnfancys 700 yards for $700. I feel the same goes for the Ruger American. 400 yards for $400. Before anyone flames me watch his video and points on why he calls it 700 for 700 and how Im referring to 400 for 400 |

The ruger will serve you well for hunting and some plinking. If you plan to shoot much from the bench replace the recoil pad and/or get a PAST shoulder recoil pad to use. The light rifle is great for hunting but after much bench shooting is a bit tuff on the shoulder without ant help.

Mid 300 to 500 yard targets and the occasional dead javelina and coyote.

the american it's designed as a good, budget conscious, hunting accurate hunting rifle. there's a huge growing market for that type of rifle as evidenced by all the sub $400 rifles. obviously that's what people are wanting to buy. manufacturing techniques have improved dramatically since the 1960's and 70's, the heyday of the rifleman I guess, and now a budget rifle is actually a much better shooter than those. or certainly every bit as good, although far less fancy.
get a decent scope, sight in for 2.5" high at 100 (or maybe 3", whatever), and go kill deer and pigs until you give it to your grandkids to kill deer and pigs with until they give it to their grandkids.* *I'm sorry, I forgot what state we live in. kill deer and pigs with it until the government orders you to turn it in

my buddy has an american in 308 he picked up for sub 300 bucks brand new here in the valley. he shoots it all day long at 400 yards and he loves it, he also commented on the lightweight being a little much... check out a savage axis as well for that price range big 5 had one in 308 for about 350 maybe less last time i was there. spare the accutrigger on the axis, the trigger is easy to lighten up if you wanna save cash

If target shooting is the primary usage, go with a heavy barreled gun.

Thanks for your opinions guys. I ended up being able to fully test the american rifle yesterday and jailed one today in .308 with a navy digital stock (the camo pattern isn`t everyones cup of tea but it made me smile.)

The Remy 700 SPS Tactical is a bench rifle, the Ruger American is more of a hunting rifle, that's why I got it all!
