Here's mine, 1911 Tac. Duracoated frame OD green, duracoated slide matte black. Filed down all the edges (not too aggressively, just enough to smooth it up), Wilson Combat trigger, Wilson Combat thumb safety.

That tan cerakote looks so amazing, I was reading a Sig 1911 thread earlier and I thought it clicked on it again lol.
The logo is still there. I will attempt to take a better pic with my Nikon D90 after I learn how to use the thing.

Talking My collection of Rock Island Armory pistols...

.45 ACP "Basic" 1911

.45 ACP "MEU-SOC Inspired" 1911

.45 ACP "Custom Duty" 1911

9mm "Limited Class" 1911

.45 ACP "Custom Compact" 1911

All of these pistols were modified by Mark Bunach, the Orange County Gunsmith (www.ocgunsmith.com/) and refinished by Mac's Shootin' Irons (http://www.shootiniron.com/). Rock Island Armory pistols are a great platform to build customized 1911 pistols from. I use RIA 1911 pistols for work carry as an armed security professional, as an armed civilian for home defense, and as a recreational shooter for competition. RIA 1911 pistols really are the best "bang for the buck"! --1911ShooterPhil

Here's mine- Wilson Combat parts and a Bar-Sto barrel on the way. Have any of you replaced the stock G.I. sights with aftermarket?

None of the Rock Island Armory 1911 pistols that I own have factory GI sights. I replaced them first thing because my eyes can't make anything of those factory sights. The front sight is Colt-style tenon post type front sight, and the rear sight dovetail will accept non-Novak and non-Bomar GI-style dovetail sights.

Check this out: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=2...TCH-REAR-SIGHT

Good, solid combat style sight.

This is a good front sight: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=8...TO-FRONT-SIGHT

Get the wide-tenon sight so the gunsmith can fit it. It is better to do oversized than undersized, because you can always remove material, but you can't add material where there isn't any.

I hope these suggestions help. These sights are "drop in". Anything else will require gunsmith labor for cutting front and rear dovetails. I have done that on most of my guns, but that will cost you extra. Just be aware of that.

On my "Custom Duty" 1911, my work carry gun, I installed XS SIGHT SYSTEMS Standard Express Sight Set for 1911 Govt. Rnd (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1...RESS-SIGHT-SET), part: 006-100-111WB. Now, remember, the slide will have to be cut. Even on the RIA Tactical models. But, in the end, you will get a good "combat profile" sight system -- in other words, you won't get "minute of angle," but you wll get "minute of man," which is what counts. I have bad eyes, but even my eyes can make this system work. With this sight system, all you have to do is put the big dot in the middle of the V shape, and on top of the white line. Then, squeeze. On a man-sized target, you just place the big dot over the target's chest. Quick and instinctive, plus great for night time shooting. I love these sights. Check out the sight picture here:

Hope this helps.

The Orange County Gunsmith
Mark Bunach
1124 West Chapman Avenue Orange, CA 92868
(949) 306-2028

Get the sights from Brownells so he doesn't have to order them and he'll just charge you for the labor. Orange is a bit of a drive from the 951 area code, but it is worth the travel. I have trusted all of my 1911s to Mark. --1911ShooterPhil

Picked up my own Tactical full-size a couple months ago. Love it. Stuck some slim grips on it... what else to change, what else to change!

Default sub 3" groups at 50 yards is possible

Just worked up this into a real nice bullseye gun. Took the existing barrel and had it welded up, and refitted it, added a new bushing, link and slide stop, flat main spring housing, new trigger, scope rail, grips and red dot.
Smithed all the other existing parts all for about $950.00

3.5lb clean trigger and the right reloads and It's going to be shot at the next match I attend.

other than grips, most people said the sights need an upgrade...

my GI needs sights and an upgraded trigger
my tactical just needs sights and maybe some smoothening of the trigger pull to make it as crisp as my kimber

Off topic question guys.... I just got my RIA and I bought aluminum blazer ammo TMJ and some how every 2 mags I get a jam- The slide does not go all the way forward - it clears easy and there are no marks on the ammo.
Would this be ammo issue? Any info would be appreciated
FYI i'm using the original mag that came with the gun

It works with regular ammo though?
Try different mags maybe?

how many rounds? is the gun still new?

most of the time with ANY semi auto pistol the MAGAZINE is the culprit

clean it and oil it, take it out again before changing anything and make sure its just not from the "break-in" process ... some handguns require upwards of 250rds for proper break in

most 1911 magazines are hit and miss, bought 2x 10rd CMC mags and only 1 of them fed properly the other one went to the trash

ive had good experience with COLT and KIMBER mags tho, i have 3 of each works good!

I use Chip McCormick Shooting Star Classic magazines, PSI ACT MAG, Wilson Combat Wilson-Rogers magazines, and Chip McCormick 10-round Power magazines. All of them work quite well in all of my Rock Island Armory 1911 pistols. The magazine is the heart of any semi-automatic pistol when it comes to fuctioning. I know these magazines work well and would recommend them to all of you.

Why waste the money? If your nit dead set on 10 round mags get some checkmate mags. I bought about 20 of them, all unissued, for less tan $5 a piece on average. All from people who were too good to use usgi type stuff.
Never had a malfunction with them.

Here's mine so far:

Still got a few things I wanna do to it but overall just trying to keep it a cheap and fun shooter as well as learning the gunsmithing side of the 1911. The drop in beavertail didn't fit quite as well as I hoped but I decided to just use it for now. I also kinda messed up cold bluing the logo but eventually i'm planning on having the gun reparkerized anyway.
