Default 9mm and Power Pistol

Hey everyone!

Somewhat new to reloading. I started with unique in 9mm and finally have gone through the entire jug. I am now using power pistol and wanted a sanity check.

My Lyman’s 49th doesn’t have load data for my specific components so I am hoping to get some feedback from the experts here.

I am using 5.4 grains of power pistol under a 124 plated round nose from xtreme. COAL is 1.135. Range pick up brass. All test rounds fired and ejected fine and I don’t think there are signs of over pressure. I am shooting these out of a glock 19 and a cz sp-01. Just wanted to make sure I am not overlooking something.

Thanks and happy holidays!!

That charge is about where I am. It's a pretty soft load.

Funny you mention that. I've always thought power pistol was pretty snappy, relative to other powders out there (titegroup, bullseye, etc.). I only use power pistol for cartridges like 10mm where I'm looking for full house loads.

Just saying it's safe to use but not the only option out there

Power pistol is an awesome 9mm powder. For me it’s 6.0gr with 115gr xtreme plated or 5.8 with a 124 xtreme plated.

My favorite all time 9mm powder is accurate #5. However when it became impossible to find a couple years back I scored some PP and don’t really miss #5 anymore. It’s a versatile powder. Works well in 38/357 and 45 too. As that’s all I shoot cant vouch for other calibers.

I do 5.4 grains of Power Pistol over 124 grain winchester fmj, it radars at 1100 fps, but is loud and flashy, but accurate. Also clean burning.

I chrono’d my 6.0/115gr load at 1170 out of my sig 226. Alliant lists 6.7 as a max load with a 115. I have some 115 xtp’s I’d like to try at that load. They show it gets 1212. I’d bet I can get at least that. Which is interesting because if you check lucky Gunner’s self defense ammo tests, 1200 for a 115 is faster than any commercial +p stuff. And 6.7 PP is not a +p loading.

Which tells me power pistol is the shiznit for 9mm.

I'm right around 5.4 gr PP also with 124's. Shoots great out of my PF9 and CW9. I think max is 6.4 gr.

Here is my personal preference based on couple years of trial and error.

9mm= Power Pistol all the way regardless of bullet wt, barrel length
40/10mm= Hodgdon Longshot, it excels on high pressure loads and burns cleaner than anything else I've tried.
45ACP= Vihtavuori N340, a little expensive but the most accurate and cleanest burning.

Anything more than 5.5 of PP with 124 coated or plated and you are just making a bigger flash and burning more powder.

Don’t get me wrong it can be fun but 5.4 runs hot enough for me.

If your gun will take it, run the oal really long and pack the case full! PP is great for chasing max velocity and making noise and flash.

I think it's a little more impressive in .40, but no problem in 9 either. It's a easy to load, safe powder. I don't think it would actually be possible to overload 9mm.

I agree. With the new ammo laws looming, I am trying to maximize the the number of rounds with the same amount of powder. I am reloading for plinking rounds so the least amount of powder that will cycle the gun is good for me!

Again, thanks to all that have responded.
