Me and some friends should be up there Sunday for most of the day. I'll keep you posed... we can chat about the range improvements.

Thanx,

Craig

You mean the long range down by Painted Cave? That one got closed for being too near people or next to Native American land or some PC bull**** like that.

Hey Craig,

I'll be up there on Sunday as well. Hopefully well get a chance to talk about range improvements. I have a pretty good idea of were we can get some materials donated for a rules of the range sign.

I'll be the guy in the silver truck with a black and tan AR.

Thanks, I have been too.
I didn't make it up there over the weekend either. However, I plan on going up there this Saturday to post signs.
Craig is working on getting the range closed for us from 8-12 on the clean-up day.

I am new to Calguns.net, but this range cleanup stuff is great.

How does one contend with shooters that are unaware of a range cleanup activity and have driven many miles to shoot?

Playing the devil's advocate, I would be a bit upset, if I drove the ~1.5 hours (the distance from Lompoc) to shoot, only to find out the range was under a cleanup process. My frustration would not be at the effort put forth by the cleanup crew, but by not being able to use the range.

Just curious,

John

Boy - I wish I would have been contacted about this. I arranged the last cleanup and own the website www.SBGlassFactory.com

I was in the process of planning another cleanup in the next month or so.

Contact Kidnk9s(aka Craig). He organized the clean up on 7/31/10 and received a lot of response from the local community(including the local rangers, local business, fire crews and Marborg disposal). The problem is getting people to show up, and getting the garbage down the hill.

The clean up that was done earlier in the year was great, but the garbage was still at the range when this clean up happened.

Here is the link that got press from the local news.

Next time, try the trip from SLO by going through Buellton, Solvang and Santa Ynez on a Saturday morning.

Anyway, my post was about cleanup vs range users and the process used to get the range cleared of shooters, not a debate about who can do the drive to the range the fastest.

A good thing to do is make a sign and hang it up on the front gate about 2 weeks prior to the clean up letting people know the range will be closed and they are more than welcome to help. Also contact the rangers. They will shut it down for you.

Any date set for a range clean up? I always bring back a bag full of trash after I shoot here. PM me when the next clean up is.

Hi and welcome John!!!

Generally everyone that is up there is very happy and understanding of our cleanups. We've held several, smaller clean ups that were kinda impromptu. This is usually no big deal to any unaware shooter at the range that I have encountered and they are usually happy to pitch in and help for a few to speed up the clean.

The smaller clean n shoots benefit from simply walking around, shaking hands and letting everyone know our intentions : preserving the BLM free range and our (everyone's) continued ability to enjoy it.

With the smaller clean ups as well - generally there will be about a 30 +/-min initial clean up, then we take an extra 10min during each cease fire to gather up more detritus.

This seems to work great when there are shooters there that did not know about the cleanup as it allows them to participate as well as it doesnt really cut into their shooting time very much.

Welcome to Calguns!

Default Anyone know when it's going to re-open?

So I went to go shooting and while buying ammo at Dodge City, the owner said it had been closed down due to fire hazards.

Now that it's raining, logically, it should re-open right? Anyone know the official.

Also is there an actual site or other place where people discuss the glass factory?

I've got a call in to the Forestry Service, they run it. Will let you know. Not sure if enough rainfall has fallen for them to have called off fire season yet?

Well you can always shoot at the Winchester Gun Club.....

I think we are in danger of losing the Glass Factory.... It really is a garbage dump..... Shooters need to get away from bottles, electronics and appliances and stick with paper (boring, for the most part). I decided to invest in portable steel targets, mostly rimfire at this point...duelling tree, falling plates, walking targets and a hardened gong!
I will warn you tho....your ammo costs will go up....it is so much fun....great for practice and add the competition factor for some great times....

Wink Re: The Glass Factory

I found out last Thursday that the Glass Factory was open. So we went up Friday the 23rd and had a "blast". I'm so glad you schedule Clean-up Days, I would be happy to join you guys on the next one.

The signs are still up and the gate is locked, but its full of people shooting.

I was up there on Friday most of the day. I am not a local but you guys better get out there, its an embaressment.

You take first time shooters up there and its a bit shocking. It looks like a garbage dump.

Well, I went up there this morning at the crack of dawn on the basis of this report and it is definitely closed and clearly marked as such with signs, cones, and tape.

I checked yesterday as well... I stopped at the Forest Service last week and they said after the next front comes thru they will re-evaluate... Perhaps we have a jokester amongst us... Thanks for the report I was going to head up that way myself!

The gate was closed on Friday but there were at least a dozen vehicles and everyone was shooting so we stayed. It does look pretty bad, though. The trash is all the way out to the the entrance. Please keep us posted on the next clean-up date. I'm there.

I saw no signs cones or tape unless they put them up Saturday morning. The gate is locked and there is a sign on the turn off the highway on Camino Cielo and one on the way down the hill saying 'No target shooting'.

But the place was full all friday 11/23.

I am not saying it is open, its clearly closed. It doesnt seem to be taking however...

They need at least a dumpster up there. I took a few bags of trash out and I didnt even make close to a dent. There is garbage everywhere.

I noticed there were no trash cans at the range. There are three picnic tables there and I thought I could donate 3 metal trash cans but we would have to chain them to the tables or something. Even so, once the range is "open" the cans would have to be emptied. I could plan on coming down once a month to empty them and replace the bags and maybe others could volunteer to change out the bags and take the full ones. We picked up what we could around where we were shooting last Fridayand some kids shooting next to us even helped! It's amazing what the power of suggestion can do.

Love the sentiment, but dont waste your time. The real "trash" will shoot them up before the next time your next visit to the range.

Portapotties, dumpsters, the tables themselves : eventually get chewed up. Thats why were're here : the thankless stewards .
