Default 308 out of 7.62 Mauser

Is it safe? Iím starting to think itís not worth the risk. I canít find a definite answer on the net. 308 is higher pressure but my 1945 Mauser is supposed to have a very strong action, but itís old as hell. Thx in advance.

It'll be fine. Looks like an Israeli K98, which is a large ring

Israeli K98 rebarrel. Strength-wise should be fine, as long as it hasn't been molested since. It might headspace on the loose side, since the 7.62x51 spec is looser than the .308Win spec.

I’m reading online 8mm Mauser is hotter than 308 so it should be fine. I’m just scared the bolt will explode but the 98 action is strong

^ Not sure where you're getting that info. 308 is about 61k psi max, whereas 8mm Mauser is more like 56k psi.

However, I have not come across any warnings about Israeli Mausers & ammo limitations.

That would depend on if it is factory manufacture or surplus 8mm correct, since the surplus runs hotter

Military Mausers have been converted to many calibers, up to and including 458 Win Mag, without issue.
As was stated, head space could be a little loose, since the Head Space specs for 7.62NATO is a bit looser than for .308 Win. But in reality, all that does is affect brass reloading life.

Finally shot it today. Functioned flawlessly. I was able to hit steel consistently at a 100 yards. Maybe next time I’ll go on the long range and try to hit further out.

98 Mauser can handle that just fine - and she’s just a youngun’, many years left on that bolt action till you can call her old!

Default Mauser to 308

See if you can find an Israeli 308 barrel. They switched the mausers over to 308 after WW2. I got lucky and found one and switched my mauser over with no problems. Barrell bolted right up with correct head space. Getting the old barrel off was the hardest part. I had to make a tool to remove it.
