Default Anyone have air rifle recommendations for young kids?

I have a 7 yr old that enjoys shooting my cheapy crosman that I bought to handle varmints in the yard. I plan to get a youth sized rimfire and take him to the range occasionally, but I want to first get an air rifle that he can easily handle, pump/cock and shoot in the back yard.

Does anyone have any experience with a lightweight, easy to cock pellet rifle with a short length of pull? Something a bit more accurate than the red ryders, but under $100.

The Ruger Explorer looks like a possibility, but I'm still concerned about the weight and length of pull.

i personally would go with a crosman 1377 with the rifle stock for the young one... that way you can switch between pistol and rifle fun

How's that one to pump? My son has trouble putting more than 1 or 2 pumps on my crosman classic 2100.

its not bad, im sure he would be able to get 5-7 pumps in before it gets a little to tough... imo pumps are great for kids as its variable power and allows for garage practice if you were so inclined. the break barrels will tire out a kid after a few shots.

http://www.airgundepot.com/daisy-953-target-pro.html

Within your price range, single stroke pneumonic, has fiber optic sights installed and you can move your child up to the more high speed models as he grows up/gets better. Stick with .177 and you can get some of the crosman premiers to feed it for accuracy and economy.

Or this one
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Avanti...air_rifle/2143

Also remember eyes and ears, while these are not as loud as a rimfire, they can and will damage your hearing over the long term.

Bengi's are good pellet guns. I love them. In fact I own 5 of them.

Crossman's 1077 is a great air rifle for the money. Semi auto C02 so kids can just keep shooting. 12 round rotary magazine. C02 is cheap especially from places like Cabelas. I got one about 15 or so years ago. Still shoot it occasionally. I think this is the model that cubscouts/boyscouts use for their air rifle competitions.

Crosman 1377c gun is a must have. Accurate, cheap, and a lot of options for mods. Right out of the box it had very tight groups from about 20 yds. I use it for plinking and small game hunting and very rarely miss.

My Gamo CFX is the best air rifle I've shot. As accurate as my 10/22 out to 50ft. No more rats running across the powerlines Its priced a little higher than what you're looking for (more then what i wanted to spend too), but I think it was worth it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. My main priority was something with a short length of pull and low pumping effort. Even with cheap CO2 cartridges, an 8 year old may put me in the poor house with their shooting enthusiasm.

Yea I know you mean. It would be real easy to buy myself new toys every month and forget about the rent. And thats only my wish list, couldn't imagine having 3 or 4 to worry about. Sorry for fanning the flames

I've taught my grand kids to shoot and they started best on crossmans 760 pumpmaster. The spring guns recoil differently and they found it harder to learn. The 760 shoots pellets and bb.

+1. I have 6 of these all diffrent configuration. One is customized to shoot Paintball C02 tanks. i can shoot thousands of rounds with a 20oz. All I gotta do is open the bolt, drop pellet in chamber, shoot, repeat.

I have to say, its the most accurate airgun Ive shot and you can adjust the speed/loudness(less speed) so your kid can get use to it. I've shot rats at 55 yards with no doubt of a miss. Great gun over all.

I also have one and it is a great gun.
Get it quick, I see that Pyramid Air has discontinued it, but Midway still has some.
$69.95

BTW, I have found a way to dramatically improve the original Gamo triggers without using the CharlieDaTuna GRT-III trigger.
PM if interested.

For a 7 year-old, I would highly recommend the Daisy Powerline Model 35.

Small stock. Very easy to pump. Fairly accurate. Shoots both BBs and pellets. Very light-weight. Reminds me a lot of the Marlin 795. Although the iron sights are more than sufficient for its range, you can also add a small scopeif needed.

For children, you should consider the Air Venturi Bronco. It is an air rifle designed for children to use. The break barrel operation does not require much effort and its quite accurate.

My first air rifle was a Crossman Optimus .22. It is just over $100, comes with a scope and is very accurate and fun. Well worth the money.
