Default Masterbuilt 40" Digital Electric Smoker only $268.31

I have an older model of this. When it's over 100* outside, I'm in the AC of the house monitoring the time and temperature via the remote. I only go out to add more water and wood chips. Three years and no malfunctions so far.
May those that love us, love us.
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May He turn their ankles
So we will know them by their limping.

Love mine. Got it last year. This one seems to be a 2018 model it’s only slightly different than mine. This is a really good smoker. Just get a pellet tray off amazon and use wood pellets for smoke. The chip tray burns out too fast.

Looks like the sale is over, but this model usually comes up on promotional prices a few times a year, including Amazon's Black Friday sale. (I paid $240 +tax in November 2014.)

I do suggest the MES cover ($25), and the AMPS (A-Maze-N-Pellet-Smoker) .. it it's a "snake" tray that works very very well. There are some mods and upgrades you can do for built-in tray, but the AMPS is good for 6+ hours of reliable smoke. Getting the smoke right is the single biggest challenge on a smoker, and the AMPS makes it easy to get that "Thin Blue Smoke" that yields the happy flavors.

There can be a few hiccups with the MES remote, at least on the older model. You set the temp on the remote. But if you then make changes on the main unit, it wont "update" the remote. Do everything from the remote, and it'll work fine. I wouldn't strictly trust the built-in temperature gauge, particularly for internal temp; the Maverick ET-733 is the go-to here, and a fine place to start.

The overall setup is reliable enough, to start it in the morning, put it on the timer, and leave for the day to smoke/cook. Great for roasts or other big cuts that like to be slow cooked, but wouldn't fit in a crock-pot (or if you don't have one).

There's several good forums for smokers, and there's usually be a section dedicated to the MES. It is to electric smokers what Traeger is to hopper-feed pellet smokers. (MES can also do cold smokes.)

Once you get a smoker, you'll start checking for deals with the butcher. Most grocery meat departments will start marking down cuts that have been sitting out, as the oxidization overwhelms the CO treatment, and the meat starts turning brown/gray. If you see a package on the shelf that doesn't look the same "red" color as the others, you can always ask them. (They'll usually mark it down within a day or two of the "sell by" date, but shelf space costs money, so they may discount it for you early to ensure it gets sold.)

The true value of a smoker is in buying "lower cost" cuts, slow cook them, and have the same enjoyment as from a more tender, higher cost cut. Also great for hunting venison or buying a side of beef, as you can yield more meat into roasts rather than just stew meat or ground.
