Maverick 88 or Remington 870???

I like the price point and capacity of the 88, but like the shorter barrel and Remington quality. Thoughts???

Love my Maverick 88, wouldn’t hesitate to get a Mossberg 500.
Personally I’d suggest getting a Maverick 88 Combo deal, just a lot for the $$$.

edit: and with the OpSol clip, my gun holds 12 or 13 Federal Mini shells.

Yep this. 870 is okay if you plan on refinishing the metal. Otherwise, a Maverick will do you good.

Not sure what the safety on an 88 looks like but for me- I prefer the top mounted safety on the Mossberg 500 series SG (& the Browning BPS). I'm sure I could learn to adapt to the Rem style down near the trigger guard but the ones on the Mossberg just feel more natural to me. With one exception: with a pistol grip the top safety then seems awkward & slow to me. Just something else to consider when shopping. Good luck.

Buy whatever, if it is for HD it is going to be unused anyway, so the details do not matter. If a barrel is too long, hack it. For this price you can do whatever.

Autoloader. There are scenarios where running a pump is inconvenient.

Ok, so 88 or mossberg 500? Is there a huge difference? Prices are not too far off

I hope it never comes to me having to use my self-defense shotgun because if I do someone will probably call out the SWAT team. It is a limited production pump 12ga. capable of bringing down very BIG bears. Talk about your over penetration. It's basically a .73 caliber big bore pump action rifle with the 600 grain ammo it is designed to shoot. Muzzle energy is 3850 ft/lbs. As a comparison the .338 Winchester Magnum firing a 225-grain bullet to velocities of 2,800 ft/s generate 3,918 ft⋅lbf. Not bad for an old 12 gauge slug gun.

I have a Maverick 88 7+1,stocks are hollow and my FDE started to wear off just handling it,I changed the slide tube to a mossberg 500 style and put wood on it.The parts are all mossberg quality after that, just a FYI there is a slight hich in the action that I smoothed out mossberg does not polish the internals anymore, played with a new 590A1 retrograde had the same hich.
I have a 50 year old Mossberg 500 riot shotgun that was slick as snot the day I bought it.
Winchester 1200s are also pretty good,I got two.
Bought a Chi Com 870 clone for 120 bucks, they are built like tanks, all steel, thick recievers and thick barrells, stocks are solid heavy plastic most Remmington parts interchange, working on the action to slick it up otherwise they are a bit stiff, almost there on it.
Hawk Industry makes the clones,Remmington owns HAWK lol and best of all they supply ALL of Chinas Military and Police shotguns you can get them new for under 200 bucks.
Hope this helps
Forgot to add the 88s safety is STIFF you have to be half gorilla to use it,gets better after a lot of use but not a lot.

Worried about rust? Worry no more ...
Be sure to replace the stock with the Magpul version for a shorter length of pull.

An 88 is a cheaper gun. You can't add a Surefire forend light, for instance. And there are other differences. At least go for the 500. And if I had it to do over again, I'd get a 590.

I have a new 870 and haven’t had any rust issues.

But.... Nova.

I gotta say..... I reeeeeeally love my Remington 870 Express Youth 20 Gauge Pump!! Yeah some will bag on low capacity, the metal, finish, etc... I have had mine bedside for years. Every time I take it out to the range, it works flawlessly with zero complaints. To each their own, I would much rather spend my money else where than "upgrading" my shotty =)

Personally, I wouldn’t consider a pump action shotgun for HD. Too much to lose.
I would suggest a Beretta 1301 Marine Tactical, Nordic magazine extension, Mesa Tactical stock/grip. Can’t think of a better way to spend a lot of money!

500 or 870 go to midway or brownells and purchase the youth stock cuts a couple inches off length of pull and shortens gun overall same, much easier to handle in confined space, for end that allows light attachment is a big plus
I believe one of the mossberg models comes from the factory with these features

I say Mossberg 500 at the minimum.

I came across a video that showed the 88 could become completely jammed if it was dropped or impacted at the right angle due to a flimsy part of the action getting stuck. The 500/590 did not suffer these issues.

I love my 590 but had to replace the factory magazine spring with Wolff's. 500 is a good choice but replace the factory magazine spring.

I also have an older 870 police trade in I got cheap. Cleaned it up and it's the slickest action of all of my pump shotties.

I like my Maverick 88 8 shot. I use it for mostly blasting away with birdshot in the desert and it's my first and only shotgun so I have nothing to compare it to. Mine was $199.00 at Big 5.

I have a Maverick and some Mossbergs. For home defense, the Maverick. Take into consideration which ever you use will seized into evidence and you may not see it for years.

I've had multiple Moss 500s and all were phenomenal, I only have one remaining I got on clearance at big 5 for $274.

I have a 930JM as well, many have complained about reliability but mine has never failed to fire once.

I still grab the pump when I hear a bump in the night, only because the racking the action can be quite intimidating in its self, and if someone stays around after that... well you know how that ends.

88 will serve you fine unless you want to turn it into some breacher barrel streetsweeper.

OP one thing to consider is that, unless you're going to be actively competing and/or taking HD shotgun courses, you'll get much more use out of a shotgun shooting clays. most places will require you have a minimum ~24 inch barrel.

870 or mossberg up to you (i lean mossberg, lighter and i like the controls better) but consider getting a gun where you can easily add a longer barrel when/if you want. I don't think mossberg makes long barrels for the 7+ tube models.

See if you can find an old used Browning Auto 5 humpback. Very reliable auto. Cut the barrel down to 18-20. Then get the appropriate Nordic Components magazine extension.

Remember to config for high base shells. BTW parts are available.

The mossberg combo is a cheap option.

If you live where rust is more of a concern, get the hunting option with factory camo paint

The 20" 8 shot Maverick regularly goes on sale for $199.00 Right now Big 5 has a coupon for $50.00 off any regular priced firearm which would put that Maverick right at $200.

I own both, like the 870 better. Just comes from the factory with a pretty slick action already. I’ve put a ton of round through the old maverick and it’s still pretty stiff.

The 500/590s have the same issue but have never had the problem myself, these are all mossberg parts made in Mexico dosnt matter what model you have.
To put another shotgun up,look at the Armscor M5 mariner coat, they are knock offs of the old High Standard Flight King. You can see it in a old Steve McQueen movie.I am thinking of picking one of these up they are about 225.00.
Saw a Remmington 870 HD used for 300 also.
Yeah I know the rabbit hole you can go down in with Shotguns

I have to say I was dissapointed with the 590A1 retrograde having the same issue as the 88 and looking inside to see the internals are not polished, not a BIG deal but still for a highend shotgun I would expect better.
The problem with the 870 clone is the reciever has a lot of internal tool marks and is a VERY tight fit,put a drop of oil on the bolt, rack it back and most of the oil is on the outside of the reciever, still is a great gun for the money and I am having fun working on it,but I understand people not wanting to work on a gun out of the box weather by choice or simply not knowing how to.
The old Winchester 1200s were known for slick actions and I have to say they were right,GREAT shotguns.
Looked at a 870 at Bass Pro and yes the action was slick, for all the guns I have I dont have a 870
I still look at that Armscorp and go HHHMMMMMM
Decisions Decisions Decisions
Cant decide which Im gona go with first.

Remington 870, especially if you think you will ever use mini shells. Another option is an H&R if you can't swing for a Remington, I hear the H&R is basically a copy of an 870. If you know you will never use mini shells then pick whichever you like the controls and feel of the best. My Mossberg 500 has been 100% reliable with regular shells, my Remington has been 100% reliable with both regular and mini shells.

Less recoil mini has 6 00 buck shot vs 9 in 2 3/4" or 15 in 3", less shot means less recoil. shorter means it will hold more, so you get more shots with less recoil.
