My sks showed up today! (second try, Century first shipped one with a cracked stock thought that wasn't what I ordered. They made things right though) Looks to be in better shape than I had expected! Off to the cosmo coffin with this one!

Don't know about what?

A Romanian in very good condition, no cracked stock, nice bluing for $315 to your front porch?

What's not to like?

AIM will sell out fast too. Get it soon. Like AIM says, this will be the last of them. And they weren't very common to begin with.

An almost-Russian SKS to your door for $315. Damnnnn.

I've got a backlog of old surplus rifles to clean up and restore, so this one probably won't get touched for quite a while . I'm so tempted though...

You're a terrible influence, you know that?

I just pulled the trigger (pun intended) on one.

Good for you! Someone else accused me of that too when Aim was selling the 91/30's for $69 and I goaded him into it.

You know you won't regret it. It's a great buy and a great rifle.

You should get another one. Doooooooo it......lol

yeah CAI imported SKS's are being stamped on the barrel under the front of the gas tube

Yugo's like mine for whatever reason are also issued a new SN by CAI and its on the left side of the rear of the receiver, AFAIK the other types of SKS's from CAI do not have new SN's put on the receiver

My Romanian has the import mark in the same location but was not stamped with a new # on the receiver.

yeah thats what i was saying AFAIK the non yugo SKS's are not issued new SN's

it may just be a requirement to issue them on the CA yugo's i'm not sure but i can tell you this my SN is very low i.e. under 1000 so that would actually seem to be the case possibly because CAI had to modify them for CA compliance by removing the GL and putting on a MB and they do so without 922r compliance, from what i heard they got a pass from BATFE for doing this, possibly a requirement was that they had to be issued new SN's for what ever reason i don't know.

Certain serial numbering schemes aren't accepted by BATFE. Cyrillic characters, for example. Or the way many countries numbered the barrel, not the receiver. There might be something about the way that Yugo's are numbered that doesn't fit the legal criteria.
I'll have to go look at my Soviet SKS. Can't remember if it got a new number or not. Then again, it's a KBI import.

the SN sequence of 59/66's are pretty straight forward they are

A-Z followed by up to 6 digit numbers

A 123456 for example

the numbers never cycled over 1 million, because they never made that many of them. the letters more or less designate what year they were made in for the most part with the exceptions of the early M59's and the ones made in 1981/82 that shared the same letter.

if anything the only thing i can think of is that BATFE does not recognize their factory issued SN's because the factory and its records for them got destroyed back in the 90's so nothing can be confirmed about when they were made but all this info has already been figured out enough by the collector community.

Woohoo, the SKS I ordered is currently sitting at the UPS facility. I should receive it tomorrow (I'll probably have to pick it up, though, since no one will be home to sign for it). Pix to come .
