Default Winchester 1892 hammer damage...can this be repaired?

I have a hammer with a damaged, ragged notch. Replacement hammers are proving difficult to find, I'd like to save the original hammer if I can.

Can this be repaired?

I saw that one,and it is an option. But, I'd like to keep the hammer original to the gun, if at all possible.

Wouldn't hurt to buy that one and still try to repair original. Then, if original repair holds, sell the spare. They will only get harder to find and prices will keep going up.

Its possible that a Rossi 92 hammer would work. Does the Winchester use a leaf or coil mainspring?

If its's made of metal, it can be repaired, heat treated, and reground. It may not be cheap, but it is doable.

There is a parts kit/lot on Gunbroker for an 1892 winchester 44/40 closing today.

Item 712388068

Rossi uses a spring, Winchester should be a leaf.

Leaf, or "flat" spring

Thanks for the info. That's a pretty cool kit - might be a bit over-kill though.
